Game The Most Disliked Fourth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of every fourth season episode for every Trek series to run that long (TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, & LD).

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome. You do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Oh boy, a long one!

I'm gonna start with a recent episode, "Empathalogical Fallacies."

I am frequently told I am T'Lyn. This is probably her best showcase episode, and I have rewatched it into the ground.

Brilliant use of the Betazoids, also. I used to have this whole Kelvin reboot of TNG in my mind, and this is what I wanted for Lwaxana - the same surface level personality we already know, but underneath it's a cover because she's a canny super spy (and you'd cast Marina Sirtis to play it, obviously). It was nice to see that idea surface in current canon Trek, because obviously I love it.

I'm going to stick with Lower Decks and save "Caves." Such a cleverly structured episode, and very moving.

In LD's second episode (after that iffy pilot, probably the weakest episode of the entire series), when there was a quick cameo from a Vendorian, I was like "OK, I think I'm going to like this show."

So I was even more thrilled to get all the Vendorian worldbuidling in "Caves." Great aliens!

And great use of Levy and his insane conspiracies.

This is getting more and more difficult! GAAAAH!! And HURRAH!!!

So many great stories across so many spinoffs, but

DS9: "Sons Of Mogh"

Ranks my highest of what's left as DS9 dares to explore Klingons in ways TNG never could, despite setting them up with all the shiny objects.

Plus, when it's not Worf getting the good stuff it's Sisko. It takes some tenets introduced from "A Matter of Honor" (TNG s2) and really builds them into something great, making its own in the process. Season four DS9 is not just a rejuvenation of itself, they're doing something WITH sprinkles of lore and making them their own, in big ways.

The ending's a bit TNG-like, but truly saccharine endings exist in other stories.

It's an excellent and multifaceted, nuanced story for sure. An underrated high point to TNG/s4.

One item that always made me giggle was that Picard's line about judging by entertainment shows as this was the era of The Jerry Springer Show and such, which in turn may have influenced "Galaxy Quest" as it thinks our entertainment shows are how-to guides, LOL!

As so often at tis stage of a game, it's hard to make a choice as there are so many good episodes. Even a completely random choice would probably hit on something good.

The Ferengi are often played for laughs and it's nice to see something a little more serious in "Bar Association". This is the point where we see Rom move on to using his engineering skills and away from the Ferengi image as "just" money-grubbers. Brunt in an episode is generally a good thing. Also some development of Worf as he struggles to live on a space station.

So many... but one really stands out right now:

TNG: "The Best Of Both Worlds, Part II"

It's technically a plot reversal of TBOBW's first part, but it's done far more cleverly than part one's build-up where it's increasingly obvious he's going to become Borgboned*, and we didn't even know IF Picard would be coming back. Even if you hadn't seen the teaser, there were many variables afoot. The teaser doesn't show him de-Borged, and even then it's possible they might have been a trendsetter for "change the credits during the season" in ways no show had done before. So we were all on the edge of our seats, filling them in anticipation of what was to come throughout.

* even then, that reveal is a masterclass that still chills, despite his being abducted and later show how his uniform were put into a surprisingly large drawer.​

The bit of using sleep mode to konk out the entire Collective is genuine brilliance and that can't be stated enough. Part one is largely robust, but part two has enough to give it a genuine edge and is one of the few times where a conclusion isn't lesser to the setup. I wish more Borg stories had such a smooth way of putting them out of action that also didn't decentralize their collective structure in the process; sleep mode is one of the few times where they pretty much would be, save for a couple core actions (with a weakness found, self-destruct as soon as possible would be the only logical course of action.)

Season 4 of every STAR TREK show (with the exception of DISCO) tends to be the best of that series. So there are a LOT of easy saves for me. Some have already been done.

Since I am a little late, I'll have to start with "STARSHIP DOWN".

Fantastic use of everyone. Worf gets some good lessons about command. Sisko and Kira truly let their barriers down and begin a real friendship. Even Quark helps save the day... by being Quark.

I have always loved episodes that utilize the entire cast. (Nearly, in this case, since Odo was absent for most of the episode.) This one is a winner.
