Game The Most Disliked Fifth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of episodes from the 5th seasons of every Trek show to run that far: TNG, DS9, VOY, DIS, and LD.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

MAKE SURE TO APPROPRIATELY TAG ANY SPOILERS FOR THE 5TH SEASON OF LOWER DECKS.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Saving "CALL TO ARMS".

DS9 season 5 is right behind DS9 season as the best season, and that's only because I think there is onky 1 full episode that was bad. (I'm sure many can guess what that is.)

Regarding this episode, it is also the best season finale in the franchise. (Yes, I'm putting it above "The Best of Both Worlds".) Everyone got good scenes, and all the pieces that were in play up to this point were moved forward. Fantastic action, great story, great scenes... an easy 10.

And that final shot of the Defiant and Rotarran comimg across the screen with the fleet... THAT beats out, "Mr. Worf... fire." And while that was a nailbiter when it first aired and that summer was quite long in anticipation, this one just made my jaw drop. That summer was torture waiting for season 6.

So very true. I was seriously debating whether to save this one or "Fissure Quest". I ended up saving the newer one, but I'm glad "Call to Arms" was saved so quickly.

[Bad Thoughts]

Saving DS9: "Nor The Battle To The Strong". This is peak Jake, using the character's nature and youth to explore concepts of bravery and cowardice that are often overwritten by the steroidal heroism of most main characters. His fear is real. The only thing I don't like about this episode is Farrell's uneven performance. Otherwise, welll acted and well written.

ETA: I love the title, taken from a verse about how no one can master life, but "time and death happens to us all."

Best. Season. Finale. Ever.

So very true. I was seriously debating whether to save this one or "Fissure Quest". I ended up saving the newer one, but I'm glad "Call to Arms" was saved so quickly.

These are heavyweight episodes. There is only one other season of television that I like better than DS9's fifth: the third season of Broadchurch.

[Seven of Five]

S5 DS9 is easily my favourite of the entire run. There were a couple of clunkers, sure, but the show was so consistent.

I'm spoilt for choice, but In the Cards was hilariously heartwarming.

I like how it furthered the war arc using the B story as well.

Saving "THE SHIP".

This was an excellent 100th episode for DS9.

We rarely see a captain talk about losing their people like Sisko does here, and that scene illustrates how well utilized Dax was for everyone. She was like Riker on TNG... the mirror and reflector to help bounce dialogue back and forth that made scenes work so well.

I especially love what Worf does at the end... I've always wondered if his story about keeping predators away was a made up one as a way to apologize to O'Brien or if it really was a tradition and it was his way still apologizing to him.

Just excellent from start to finish.

Jeri Ryan turns in such an incredible performance in "Infinite Regress." It got even better when I learned she got the script at the last minute, didn't know anything about these other alien races going in, and threw it all together doing quick watches of old Trek episodes.

It also has one of my favorite bits of Seven dialogue, when Naomi says she is trying to learn to be perfect.

I'm saving Voyager's "Night", as I thought it was interesting seeing Janeway go through her own The Cage/Emissary moment where she has to deal with her guilt and depression, mirrored by the ship's journey through an empty starless void. Plus it's got some unique space scenes for Trek as there's no mysteriously bright starlight to light the ships up and everything's illuminated solely by its own lighting and engine glow.
