News Star Trek: Discovery Will Be PG-13 Plus

I remember Napoleon Dynamite covering a wide range of adult topics as a PG rated film. But doing so is not an easy proposition. The -13 part might be beneficial in that regard, as long as we don't get too T'Polified.

Yeah, I guess PG isn't what it used to be but it doesn't sound like a "hard" PG-13 either. Not with basic cable starting to lay out f-bombs and what not. I think you can see graphic violence at 8PM even on network shows. There does seem to be a pretty solid nipple barrier that is hard to overcome.

T'Pol wasn't sexyfied; she was objectified. In other words, they took the most talented actor playing the most interesting character on the show and depicted and used her to pick up ratings with adolescent boys.

They could explored the idea of a Vulcan woman exploring her [culturally] repressed sexuality with a different race. That would have been interesting and potentially provocative. Instead they came up with a silly plot device for the sole purpose of showing her in her underwear covered in body oil.

In fairness I think everyone in the cast fell victim to the decon scenes which I never really thought that much of when I first watched the show. Heck even porthos fell victim to one

What's wrong with how they showed T'Pol

For one thing her pajama's were always to small. Poor woman must have had a bad time doing laundy, always shrinking her clothes to a point were the shirt doesn't even cover her stomach.

As for being PG 13 I find it interesting is that you can't say Fuck or do nudity anyways with that rating so this doesn't seem so much as something they felt they needed to do so much as it's something you got no choice but doing if your going to be PG-13.

I found that to be irksome. It pulled me right out of the story. REALLY? You're so desperate to tart her up you'll make her PJs too small?

Her character had the potential to be the most interesting but they went too far down the human route for me...I wanted a Vulcan, not a human Vulcan.

As for her acting, I only saw Blalock in one other thing - Stargate SG-1, which I also watched. Swear to God she played the same wooden-type character. So not sure how broad her acting range really was.

I agree. I didn't much care for her acting as well. What also bothered me is that she was clearly just supose to be another Seven of Nine. At the very least if your going to do a character that is going to have sex appeal that doesn't mean you got to go for the exact same type. I call it the Dominatrix character trope though some might say Ice queen. Why can't you have someone who is sexy and also is just a normal, regular person you might meet in the real world.

Using sex and bad language just as a joke or casually is juvenile. Look I'm against rating systems all together but Trek was a family oriented show that took on serious subjects over and over again from 1966 till 2000s when Voyager and even Enterprise took on serious subjects occasionally. And of course it dealt with a lot of these situations in a less than stellar matter many times but at it's best it was about as good as you've seen in dealing with adult situations over and over again.

Sometimes though you need foul language for realism. Imagine if on "Sopranos" all the mobsters were saying things like dang, fiddlesticks, jerk etc.

Sopranos is a different reality. Star Trek was supposed to be a post conflict era for humanity. In other words being offended was a thing of the past. Violence between at least human and allied cultures was a thing of the past. You aren't going to have violent content in Trek unless it tells a message and has a point.

Unless of course your trying to do a show more grounded in reality. I think the Roddenberry vision for TNG is dead. I think it's still possible to do a show that has a sense of awe about space travel, though I don't think this show is going to be that show.

It's possible though and it might have a "Guardian of the Galaxy" or "Farscape" aproach to stories. I am thinking more "Battlestar Galatica" to be honest which is also okay. Thing with Trek is each show can do it's own thing and doesn't need a overal vision. Not sure if we will have the shared universe idea anymore which when you think about can almost be linked to just a handful of people like Berman,Piller,Braga,Taylor,Behr.Taylor,Okuda's,Zommerman and Moore. Fuller could have been that guy and maybe Meyer can do it but I don't know.

All I can say to this news is "Good."

Maybe this will put the "GoT in space" hand wringing to rest. Doubtful, but I can hope.

A more serious take on relationships is something Trek has usually sucked at so I'd welcome it, even with some sex scenes. There are ways to make those add to the story, characters and mood (see: Shameless) and not just provide gratuitous fan service for the male gaze (see: Game of Thrones).

In any case I'd much prefer "more sex" over "more dreariness and war".

I like ENT, but jesus this is spot on.

In any case, so long as the more adult content is serving the story in some way and not being used to just be controversial or sexist, I'm all for it. I hope Kirsten Beyer's presence will keep the objectification out of the writers room.
