Useless Question: How do you group Star Trek?

TOS AND TNG: The old stuff.

EN, VOY, AND DS9: The sort of old stuff.

THE MOVIES: The movies.

TAS AND LD: The cartoons.

DISC, PIC, SNW: The new stuff

ANYTHING ELSE THAT I FORGOT TO MENTION: Something I don't care enough about to remember.

Did audiences at the time know the next movie was already into production, or was it not known until movie posters and trailers drop? Pre-internet and all.
Besides Starlog (as mentioned) and other science fiction media magazines, the local newspapers would carry movie gossip columns which would occasionally have info on whatever Trek movie (or TV show) was in production or being announced. From 1982 on the Paramount-produced Entertainment Tonight TV show would feature behind the scenes segments.

I group Star Trek in "what interests me" and "what does not interest me". I'm not so much into the franchise that I feel any need to put its shows into specific groups. Haven't watched a lot - if not most - of them anyway. ;)

I went back-and-forth on this, but this is how I landed:

TOS, TAS, and I-VI
TNG and its Spin-Offs
DSC and its Spin-Offs
The Abrams Movies

I could sub-divide these even further if I wanted to, but I'll stick with the Basic Four.

For Clarity:
I'd put PIC, LD, and PRO in the TNG Lane.
I'd put SNW, S31, and SFA in the DSC Lane.

I consider ENT a spin-off of First Contact, which is a TNG Movie, so I also put it in the TNG Lane.

Pretty simple for me. There are four groups.

The TOS era, which includes the TOS movies and TAS.

The TNG era, which includes everything from TNG through ENTERPRISE, including the TNG movies.

The Kelvin films, which are their own thing.

The modern streaming era: DISCO, PICARD, SNW, LOWER DECKS, PRODIGY, etc.
