News Star Trek: Discovery Will Be PG-13 Plus

A more serious take on relationships is something Trek has usually sucked at so I'd welcome it, even with some sex scenes. There are ways to make those add to the story, characters and mood (see: Shameless) and not just provide gratuitous fan service for the male gaze (see: Game of Thrones).

In any case I'd much prefer "more sex" over "more dreariness and war".

I can already predict one kind of sex scene we will get and that is Klingon sex. Klingon sex has always been something of a Trek fascination. It's always been speculated to be very brutal and dangerous. It's mostly been played for laughs such as Worf and Jadzia going to sickbay with broken arms and cuts. I think we will see a very intense Klingon sex scene. I know that would concern some but I think it will play like Buffy's sex scene with Spike in season 6 were they basically bring down a whole house around them. Tense and violent but still suitable for PG-13

I also thank we will see fungus guy and his boyfriend Ricky from "My So Called Life" have a sex scene as well but I wonder if they might hold off on that until season 2 out of fear of angering conservatives.

You also got Amanda and Sarek which would be interesting. One theory is they aren't able to conceive another child which impacts them bringing in Burnham into their home. Sarek never bonds with her but Amanda does and even though they never grew close Sarek and Burnham now have to sort of work together on the show. That little bit about "her tongue being to human" is simply a reflection of their icy realtionship and the fact he doesn't get along with Spock either might be a indication that Sarek is simply not a great father. He cares about Spock but is unwilling to try and connect with him in the way he needed him to.

I'm hoping the PG-13 "plus" will just mean a bit of blood and they can say words like "crap" occasionally. If there is one thing Trek doesn't need, its sexual content of any kind. From TOS to ENT nothing was worse then the times trek tried to do sexual stuff (well, purly romantic stuff was also atrocious, but that usually went hand in hand with the times it tried to be "sexy"), so hopefully it leans more toward PG when it comes to any relationship type stuff. Bare minimum for me is no nudity (which is basically guaranteed from what I can tell),and no sex scenes more intense then what they can show on prime time TV. Also, if I even hear the word "decon chamber" I'll probably run screaming out of the room :barf:

Flawed characters are good. One of the things that I didn't like about TNG was that they were just too good.
^^^^
Yep that (IMO) was an issue with the 24th centuiry era shows across the board (yes, DS9 strayed very occasionally, but even in DS9 they snapped back to "The Federation way is the 'right way'..." still a bit too often for my tastes.

I think they could say crap and show a little blood in the 1990's so it's going to be much more intense. I think it will basically be around the level of "Battlestar Galatica" I think we will have no Fuck for sure. No overt words that are terms for sexual organs or a sexual act though I think the word "sex" will be used more instead of things like being intimate or making love. I think you might get away with Balls but you usually have to use a less agrressive word like Wang or for some reason the real word in Penis is more acceptable than the curse word. Remember Jack O'Neill got away with that on Stargate. I wouldn't call these overt because they sound more funny than graphic.

I think Son of Bitch is a popular word. Used plenty by Sawyer on Lost and many times on X-Files. Shit is also less dirty nowdays than it was when I was younger but only when used as a expression of anger and not a description of getting ride of internal waste. I imagine we will get a few made up curse words. "Farscape" was great at that. They always felt dirty to me even if they were just funny alien words. "Battlestar Galatica" had Frak of course but it would have helped to diversify itself with a few other made up curse's so they didn't overuse that word.

Also I think we will see a bathroom and people using the bathroom. "Babylon 5" I think was the first for a sci-fi show in doing this so I doubt that will be seen as graphic in 2017 unless its someone sitting on a toliet. You can show the toliet, you can show someone flushing the toliet just nobody using the toliet. You can show someone using a urinal but only from chest, upwards. Also I think you can hear the sound of peeing but not of pooping with the possible exception if it sounds unnatural and thus is funny sounding.

As for romance I suspect we will get plenty of this. Romance has a tendency to help make a show feel more edgy than it really is. Network tv uses it way to much because they can't show cable level violence so they replace it with steamy kissing and characters wiggling on beds, but always with most of their clothes on. I mentioned above though I really expect lots of Klingon sex. They are aliens so that will soften the edge a little but because Klingons like fighting in sex it will feel very intense as well.

Also I think Mudd is going to be a big player when it comes to romance. He is a rogue type which is a role that usually comes with someone who is really horny a lot. Plus Rainn WIlson is not as sillly looking as the first Mudd so he is going to come off even more dirty and more like a weasel than the first one, even if he never does anything nearly as bad as being a pimp on the show.

I suspect that the PG-13+ is more marketing speak to hype it up. From what they say, it sounds more like PG and that they'll pull their punches.

However, language, violence, and sex/nudity can really add to the perceived realism of a show if done correctly. Unfortunately, Trek has a history of failing on portraying those (particularly language, nudity, sex, and relationships) realistically. Maybe the new people will change that?

Again, I'm betting they'll pull their punches and we won't get anything more extreme than what was seen the new movies. In fact, those movies are probably a good predictor of what we'll get in that regard.

Reason I don't think they will pull their punches is because they will want people to see CBS access as being more edgy and sophisticated than plain old CBS which is famous for being the old person network. In fact I think this CBS access thing is what ABC and NBC and maybe FOX see's as their next evoultion in staying relevant when trying to compete with cable. Not to mention Netflix has got to have a say in this and I don't think they would want a bland CBS show that doesn't have any bite.

Perhaps. But, I'll believe it when I see it. From the onset reports and interviews, I don't get that impression at all. Perhaps the biggest improvement will be more natural language, but that doesn't warrant the PG-13+.

If there is a Klingon sex scene I expect bones to be crushed, or I will get out my "not canon" drum.

Not only that but if the man doesn't read poetry while the woman tosses heavy objects at him then that would go against canon as well.

Jason

But that would be established canon. It's just something we have never seen. We saw the after effects in "Looking for Par March" and the "Voyager" ep with Klingons. If they don't break bones and if the man doesn't read poetry while the woman tosses heavy objects at him then that would go against canon.

That was my point. :) Although it was meant to be taken lightly.

A lack of Klingon nudity is everyone's loss IMO

Maybe we could have a bunch of naked Klingons in a sauna heated by a Horta. And just to cover another base they could be throwing those nice looking new daggers we've seen at tribbles suspended from the ceiling. In a cave. And the scene will be in red, not more fucking blue.

What if these Klingons are loved by Tribbles and keep them as pets or maybe they feed them to their targs if they don't like them. I also wonder how they will work in the painsticks. Maybe they can get John Tesh back to play a painstick carrying Klingon as a call back to the first time we saw them.

I think PG-13 is exactly right! It really shouldn't be "R". I wouldn't mind if most episodes are more "PG", and only some have PG-13 elements. But this is a completely new type of show with a new style. They should have enough freedom for their sparkle of sec'n'violence, but it should still qualify as a family show as a whole.

I just find it hard to believe that any of the characters we've seen in Trek ever have sex.

Except maybe Nimoy's Spock.
