News Star Trek: Discovery Will Be PG-13 Plus

I'm sorry, I'm not very familiar with the American rating system, but isn't PG-13 reserved for the movies showed in the cinema? Don't Tv shows use TV Parental Guidelines rating system? And, anyway, I thought the MMPA decided what is appropriated for a PG-13 movie, not the authors (who sometimes have to cut their film to get the rating, so probably they aren't the best judges of what is "PG").

The problem with sex in general in media is that its objectified way too often. We giggle about it with our friends when we're younger and we don't necessarily grow out of it and Hollywood takes advantage of that. But sex is a part of life. To put it bluntly: Most everybody fucks. (Unless they've taken vows to not do so or choose not to.) This will not change in the 23rd century. If there is sex in Discovery, and I have a strong feeling there will be, My hope is they can treat it as adult (not meaning porn) as between two partners (or more) in a way that makes sense not JUST to have sex on Star Trek. We don't want that giggling quotient. Its too much.

I have mixed fillings about sex in Star Trek. I wonder how the first couple seasons of TNG would have been like if they didn't have to adhere to standards and practices. Remember the episode "Justice"? Yowza! I actually think Roddenberry would have went for nudity in Trek if he could have gotten away with it.

But... just for the sake of preventing internet/social media uproar, I'm glad they're not going to do it.

Even after two decades of the TV guidelines system, I think people in the US still tend to think of things in terms of "G/PG/R" due to the ubiquitousness of the movie ratings system. The MPAA ratings board does determine the rating of movies that are submitted for review, but there has been plenty of disagreement over what content should get what rating. As I understand the TV ratings system, the networks themselves assign age ratings to their shows, and there is a monitoring board in place to deal with complaints, but shows are not submitted to the board in advance to be rated. There is sometimes a noticeable difference in the content of shows with the same rating on regular broadcast TV vs cable.

I've heard that one of Roddenberry's ideas for TMP was that casual nudity would be commonplace in everyday life on Earth among advanced and enlightened humanity, as we would have evolved past our primitive notions of modesty.

Plenty of sex in Trek, it was always just implied, but still very clearly there. Kirk bed his share of ladies pretty clearly, in TNG Tasha seduced Data (that while episode was a literal f*ck-fest), there was the episode Troi was possessed and seduced an ensign, and the episode with Famke Jansen Riker very clearly uses the holodeck to masturbate.

Risa was created as a way of exploring sex, Dax used the holodek to get some, and often talked about her relations with various partners, Sisko and Kassidy had sex and conceived a child, as did Paris and Torres.

Out of a desire to be a family show, however, they've never gone very far with it, a few ENT scenes notwithstanding.

Also, just as a shocker, many people often are naked under their clothes.

Further news as this develops.

I have a second source who confirms -- Human beings in fact naked under our clothes. We now take you live to our roaming reporter, @fireproof78 , with more. Fireproof, how did we come to this discovery? One would think that we would know this all along--

Wait a minute! This just in! A group is protesting suggesting that any nudity, even under ones clothes, is in fact sacrilege! Anything to add, Fire?

Well, @Campe98 as with most of these stories, it came from the most unlikeliest of places...the TSA. At first it seemed a cruel joke, that scanners were making up images for laughs, and then it escalated from there.

Only that there have been a number of people running around, attempting to knock over vending machines, for fear that Coke Zero may actually lead to an outbreak in this pandemic.

Reporting live from the TSA station in northwest Alberta, this if @fireproof78

I know how I would like sex to be handled on Trek. I would like it handled kind of like on "Glee." or almost any Kevin Murphy show. Not only is sex important to the characters and they can be somewhat frank about it and maybe even graphic you don't really see many actual sex scenes. To me watching sex on tv or even porn to be honest is really boring. I don't see why people like watching it. Other than a Klingon sex scene I could care less if they showed any sex scene and they just did the , after sex, scenes were you got two people in bed.

What I do want though, which kind of goes back to my original idea is that there is diversity in the way people think about sex. Some are kind of prudes, some into kinky stuff, some want to be with only one person and others don't and etc. Plus these patterns cross over everyone whether your a straight male, gay, woman, transgender etc. I really hope the gay couple aren't neutered when it comes to sex, just because it might offend some bigots. I actually would like it if it was established that when it comes to sex people have become somewhat like hippies with free love stuff from the 60's only now you don't have mean conservatives judging you and looking down at people for being, indecent..

Don't forget "love instructors"!
