Star Trek Discovery Season 4 episode Ratings

So apparently with star trek season 4 on IMDB, Not one single episode has scored above a 6.0/10

I must say, that is bad. very bad, I can not speak my truth to this as I stopped watching the show, although I said I will start watching it again, but seeing such low scores for every episode in season 4 is turning me off.

So the question is, just how bad is season 4 or do you think the IMDB ratings are unfair.

I don't think there's anything strange about season 4 getting lower scores on IMDb, it matches up with what I've seen elsewhere, it matches up with the scores it's been getting on Trek BBS, and it matches up with my own personal ratings. Generally people aren't enjoying this season as much as they did earlier seasons.

That said, there was a dramatic drop in the IMDb ratings for the very first episode this season, long before anyone had a chance to get annoyed with the repetition or the slow pace. By the look of it, the scores are one step below where they should be, with the season getting 5s and 6s when the rest of the data indicates it should be getting 6s and 7s. I've seen this same thing happen with Doctor Who recently, where an admittedly weak run has been getting even weaker scores than you'd expect. Lots of people turning up and rating every episode a '1'.

I'm not sure this is the season to try to get back into the show, but the IMDb ratings do look to be unfair.

DSC has become a target for many hate-groups. Not just the Gatekeepers who see DSC as the bastardization of the 'old Trek', but there are also downright racist, alt-right groups out there that grade everything DSC 1/10 because: women are in command, people of colour are in command, there are gay people, transgenders, etc. I don't think this should be underestimated.... Just look at what happened with the Rings of Power-trailer.... We cannot deny that there are large groups out there that disqualify DSC beforehand, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the show itself.

I don't think 'normal people' go on the internet and put as many 1/10 ratings as they can on a show they hate. What kind of person would do that..? I think there are many people that love DSC, that don't go on the internet and write about it in YT comment sections or whatever. I think that 'review bombing' and 'toxic fandom' are two very real things these days, and thus, ratings on the internet (negative or positive) are something you cannot take serious anymore, as they have become totally meaningless.

I think that doesn't count for this BBS though. Most DSC episodes here average between 7 and 8, which I think is fair for this season.

As Roald pointed out above, Discovery has been a target for review brigaders since it began. Anything perceived as “woke” is targeted by a certain group of people to leave negative reviews. It’s not just Discovery, but other shows and movies too. In the case of Discovery, more people rated the show in the first couple of seasons which served to somewhat balance out the unfair negative ratings.

I don't know a damn thing about the correct way to turn votes into ratings, but I tried putting the raw IMDb numbers into a spreadsheet to see what came out:

KZeSPV8.png

Blue is the numbers I got out of IMDb, orange is the weighted score that IMDb calculated themselves, and grey is what happened when I copied the numbers of people who voted '2' into the '1' row to hopefully nullify the hateful 1 voters. (I did nothing to nullify all the people that voted 10 for every episode).

IMDb scores aren't perfect but it doesn't seem like they're entirely meaningless. They're still in the ballpark, and you can at least get a feel for what episodes people preferred over others within a season.

(Feel free to come up with better graphs if I've calculated this wrong).

Generally, as observed last years, discovery ratings on IMDB have been slightly below the average, while on this forum slightly above. Still, the fact that both ratings dropped a lot is indicative that a lot of people aren’t liking this season much.

I haven't been rating the episodes this season because I think it'll play better as a whole and want to rate it on that basis.

I'll probably end up giving it an 8-ish. I like it better than S2 and S3.

The IMDB is mixed with ratings given by actual fans of DSC and those who are only watching because it's Star Trek. A typical show only has fans of that particular show watching it.

RWNJ's giving absurd ratings is a part of it.

I have liked this season more than S3, for sure. But I have liked the first half better every year.

even if it’s just the BURNHAM WHISPERS EVERY LINE
well, they really worked to avoid this as much as possible this year (and the crying too). In season 3 she did it pretty much in every single episode, now it’s very rare.

Until the mid-season break lull I got the impression the fourth season was generally being well received. DSC still generates a lot of negativity in certain quarters though, even if it’s just the BURNHAM WHISPERS EVERY LINE crowd. Who knows.
It's what I thought. Reminds me of the reaction to Season 2 all over again.

I think even with Season 5 being 10 episodes, someone will come up with something. And whatever it is probably won't even register with me until it's brought up here. It's a dance and I have to wonder how many times we have to dance this dance.

Earlier in the 4x11 episode thread, I saw myself in the dance, until I caught myself, broke away, and did the limbo instead.

Season 4 is good. There are a lot of Disco haters with nothing better to do in their wasted and pathetic lives to make sure that others know how much they hate it. I started another thread about this. Never go by online scores by "fans."

Honestly, I just can't help but be confused when numbers get posted. Why does it matter? If I'm a fan of the show I will keep watching, numbers or no numbers. If I'm a detractor, well, I guess it is a cause for celebration?

Calvin and Hobbes please help me make sense of this nonsense:

IMDB scores for Discovery have never been great, but they've been worse this season.

I've seen some conjecture this is because there's a tranche of international viewers who formerly watched the show on Netflix and now cannot. Hence they are either troll-rating the show due to being butthurt, or not rating the show at all.

Unless I am mistaken P+ doesn't make actual ratings public.......so NONE of these sites ratings/reviews really make a difference and can be faked. I have IMDb Pro and I never take time to rate and review anything...........I have done maybe 3 or 4 in 20 years. Films/shows that I REALLY loved. I have NEVER done a negative review of anything. If I don't like it........I just don't watch it again.

Which only adds to the confusion. It strikes me as all so meaningless. I am having a very Ecclesiastical moment.
