News Prodigy to air on Paramount+ outside of US

I wasn't especially interested in watching it anyway, but that's a definite no for me. Already have to bounce between Netflix and Amazon for Trek.

Of course if SNW ends up there I may have to reconsider.

My understanding - never been entirely sure of this - is that CBC - being a Crown corporation - was under some degree of pressure from social conservative factions within the Conservative government of the day. Because Jack Harkness and the Torchwood spinoff series that got built around him. "Get rid of those shows or we cut off your federal money one way or another", that kind of behind-the-scenes threat.

How much success that faction would have really had within the "big tent" movement that Stephen Harper was trying to hold together...?

But in any case, I don't think CBC would have dropped the show willingly.

Did I get that right? P+ will be released as an add-on to Sky here in Germany?
So, even if so wanted it, which is don’t at this time, I would need sky first?
Blegh!

As I understand it, you can still sign up to it separately, but Sky customers can get it through their existing set-top boxes. (For example, I have Sky and can tie in Netflix and Disney+ to my subscription, but that doesn't stop me having them separately.)

The Variety article on the tie-up says as follows:
The streamer will also be available direct-to-consumer in U.K., Ireland, Italy and GSA [Germany, Switzerland, Austria] through the Paramount Plus app for iOS and Android and across supported connected TV devices and OTT platforms.

Still, annoying that we'll have to wait about six months to watch Prodigy...

I'm guessing the delay is due to getting all the European dubs ready?
If it’s going to be in Switzerland, then the French subtitles should already be there. As it is, we’re still cut off unless we go the illegal route. It will be interesting to see what they decide for the rest of Europe. Dubbing is relatively rare here (France), and people mostly use subtitles.

I'm intrigued to watch. Paramount+ content at the moment (outside of Trek) sounds naff though, so I'm not sure it's worth it to sign up.

I haven't heard that theory before. I was under the impression that it was one of those pendulum swings at the CBC, going from "we need to make money with popular international programming" back to "this is a taxpayer-funded Canadian channel for Canadian content and it should not be spending its money competing with private broadcasters instead of producing Canadian shows."

The Hell of it is that Doctor Who was co-created by a Canadian expat in the UK. Reminding the public of that, and that the series is owned by a public broadcaster peer-organization, could have made for a defence of the money spent. That, and the hopes of getting location shoots done in Canada from time to time. You've all seen what the people and facilities available in Toronto are able to do for various Trek series, ditto Vancouver for DC Comics' various TV adaptations over the past decade...

Man, Bell must really have paid a lot of money to keep Star Trek exclusive to them in Canada. We have Paramount+, but Prodigy is going to be airing on cable just like the other shows.

So back in the day, CHUM (which owned CityTV and Space - now the CTV SyFy Channel) owned the exclusive broadcast rights for Star Trek in Canada. In the mid-2000s, CHUM was purchased by CTVMedia and the Trek broadcast rights were just transferred to CTV. Then CTVMedia was bought out by Bell Media about a decade ago and again, the rights were transferred to Bell. When CBS announced its intention to create a new Star Trek show, Bell already had a deal in place re: Trek broadcast rights (this is why the show airs on TV rather than just streaming on Crave), but Bell did purchase the exclusive streaming rights for all new Trek content for an undisclosed amount. But basically, it didn't cost Bell a lot because there was already a pre-exisiting deal that just had to be expanded slightly.

Bell Media doesn't own the exclusive streaming rights to the original streaming library (TOS to ENT) which is why Netflix Canada still has all the older series (though I've heard a rumour that the Star Trek library will also be expiring on Netflix Canada in the not too distant future).

I wonder who owns the rights to the movies then. Non the pre-ST09 movies are Netflix or Crave.
There's a really weird situation as far as broadcasting rights with the movies go in Canada. CTV Sci-Fi can broadcast all of them except for STID, which gets broadcast on Showcase.

Paramount still completely idiotic when it comes to marketing. This basically says "I don't want your money".

You don't get this mess with modern companies - Disney, Netflix, Amazon etc.
