News Prodigy to air on Paramount+ outside of US

I joked each new series would need a new streaming platorm outside the US and Canada... and here we are. Prodigy will be part of Paramount+'s International launch. Trekcore link.

Personally I'm not in any rush to see it, but damn thats annoying.

Man, Bell must really have paid a lot of money to keep Star Trek exclusive to them in Canada. We have Paramount+, but Prodigy is going to be airing on cable just like the other shows.

At some point they have to keep shows exclusive to Paramount+ or there is little point in subscribing to them. DISCOs run will probably end in the next 2-3 years, PIC is rumoured to be only 3 seasons, so eventually all Trek (or at least new Trek) will be exclusive to P+.

The more shows they license out the longer it well take for the international version to be compelling for a Trek fan.

I think it has more to do with the fact that, for whatever reason, the Canadian Paramount+ outlet is just terrible and all their original content is available in Canada either on cable or on other streaming services. Hell, even Paramount's theatrical movie releases for this year are on other streaming services in Canada, like A Quiet Place 2, which is on Amazon Prime in Canada, without extra charge at that.

I was hoping they would have all of the other Star Trek shows on it as well when it launches. but that is probably too much to ask. It felt like they're going out of their way to use as many streaming services as possible in the distribution of the new stuff.

In italy it’s streaming on sky.

Pretty annoying, as discovery and lower decks are on Netflix and Picard on amazon prime.

I feel like UK fans (and I'm sure we're not alone internationally) are going to get screwed here.

Unless P+ pulls back content, that's three online services a modern fan might need to subscribe to.

(I find DSC totally repellent so at least that's only two at best for me, but still!)

If I understood this correctly, Prodigy will release Fall 2021 in US, but only 2022 in Europe? That would really suck, considering we in Finland already have Paramount+ available as a service.

Star Trek being available on multiple services does not directly bother me, as I just cancel the subscription when an interesting show ends, and renew it when one begins. Altough I always have Netflix, as I subscribe to it with a group of friends.

Anyway, in the future all Trek should migrate to Paramount+ as deals with other services end. I actually have no idea how long deals CBS made with, say, Netflix.

No chance of me taking out a subscription to Paramount+, I barely watch Netflix, Amazon and Disney as it is, apart from Discovery, Picard, The Mandalorian and the Marvel shows. That's a hefty outlay for a few shows.

At least it's only an animated - I've failed to sit through Lower Decks twice now - even if it's bearable I doubt this will be essential viewing either.

I think that's because these shows are actually produced in Canada (Picard excepted) so count as "Canadian content" and they get some tax breaks/incentives if they screen them on television as opposed to a subscriber-only streaming service?

I imagine that Strange New Worlds will be a Paramount+ exclusive in Europe too, makes sense to have at least one live action Trek series on the service.

As for Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks I imagine Netflix and Amazon will keep them as long as those shows run. I suppose ViacomCBS could try to re-negotiate/end the contracts early but I doubt them two would give up the rights to those shows for nothing particularly if they're bringing in a substantial amount of views/subs.

Such a rule is often cited, though I'm not sure it's a thing these days, as there are plenty of shows which are produced in Canada these days but are only available on streaming services in Canada, most notably The Expanse.

They get a tax break if they use Canadian actors and production crew/staff as part (percentage) of the production as a whole. There's no law that says - "Must be made available to Canadians via a Canadian network" clause.

I would imagine that the Canadian Entities that are showing Trek, are probably giving CBS/Paramount monies upfront to help fray the cost of the productions.
Thus getting the rights to air the shows.

CBS signed a deal with them at a time when they weren't sure how the streaming portion of the business was going to go. They were effectively covering their bases in getting a revenue stream that they knew would continue if the streaming aspect of the business didn't turn out the way CBS/Paramount management hoped.

The streaming part of the business for CBS and Paramount seems to be doing very well; but they are still required to fulfill the contracts they made with the CBC regarding current and future Star Trek productions. I'm sure CBS/Paramount would love to rather have Paramount+ be the outlet in Canada for their shows, But they made a contract that I'm sure has a favorable renewal/continuation clause to the CBC and the CBC is continuing to exercise it.

@Tuskin38 is correct. Much as I would love for CBC to have landed all of this, they didn't. Bell Media got that deal, and they run the CTV SciFi Channel.

Personally, I'm glad it was Bell Media that got it instead of CBC. CBC handled Doctor Who poorly, and that was a show they were co-funding themselves at the time. Broadcast of Doctor Who improved immensely once Bell Media got it and it moved to Space (what's now CTV Sci-Fi). I'm sure if they had the new Star Trek shows they would handle them just as terribly. For starters, they'd undoubtedly be editing them down to fit in a one hour timeslot.
