Man, these are some of the toughest first round matchups to call in recent memory.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
#1 Boston Bruins vs. #8 Montreal Canadiens
Bruins in 5. Montreal, despite their better play of late, just don't match up anywhere on the ice to Boston. I think this is pretty much the only no brainer of the first round.
#2 Washington Capitals vs. #7 New York Rangers
Capitals in 6. The Rangers' top scorer this year was Antropov with 59 points, and he wasn't even around before the trade deadline. Nuff said. Lundqvist is good enough to steal two games, but that's it.
#3 New Jersey Devils vs. #6 Carolina Hurricanes
Tough call. You have to like Jersey this year considering how well they played without Martin Brodeur, but the Canes have been nothing short of incredible down the stretch and Cam Ward looks like the hottest goalie (behind Luongo) heading in to the post season. Carolina in 7.
#4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #5 Philadelphia Flyers
Could go either way. I'm going to go with Malkin and Crosby over Richards and Carter though, and Fleury over Biron and say Penguins in 6.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
#1 San Jose Sharks vs. #8 Anaheim Ducks
Anaheim is a tough matchup for anyone, but the Sharks look to be healthy and I think they can take them. Woldn't be surprised at an upset tho-ugh. Sharks in 6.
#2 Detroit Red Wings vs. #7 Columbus Blue Jackets
For some reason Columbus scares the hell out of me, and Detroit's goaltending should scare the hell out of any Wings fan. Even though they scored the most goals in the NHL this year, the playofs are a different animal and I'm calling the massive upset. Columbus in 7.
#3 Vancouver Canucks vs. #6 St. Louis Blues
Give me a fucking break. Canucks in 5.
#4 Chicago Blackhawks vs. #5 Calgary Flames
I think that Calgary is a team headed in the wrong direction, no one likes Phaneuf, Jokinen looks to be a pretty big mistake and Mike Keenan is a terrible coach who's players always end up turning on him. I think Chicago's young guns will skate circles around them. Hawks in 5.
