Unless I missed something I don't get why Sawyer would have even though that.

Sawyer believed that because in a previous episode, I forget which, he asked Smokey why he couldn't just fly over the water to Widmore's camp instead of having to take a boat. Smokey made it clear that he couldn't do that.

Sawyer foolishly put two and two together and came up with five and Smokey allowed him to make this mistake.

Sawyer put 2.0 and 2.1 together and came up with 4. Smokey did cross over water, but by boat, right? Based on limited information (i.e. lack of pop-up informational captions) i think Sawyer is doing the best he can.

He knows unLocke has SOME kind of limitations (why else couldn't he escape), and water seems logical.

i think Sawyer's real problem is that he quit trusting Jack, since the last time he did so, Juliet died. So his decision made sense, even though it was the wrong one.

Now that Sawyer has now killed 3-4 people, i think he'll be a little more humble.

My theory is that the Alt. Universe people will go bac in time, and fix the situation. Jack and Sawyer will replace Jacob and Smokey (hmm J & S ...maybe that's why Jin and Sun were possibly candidates?)

But we will see...very soon!

I think Sawyer's plan was to get him in to the water, not under it on the submarine.

Smokey may very well be incapable of travelling over or through water under his own power. I agree that Sawyer was doing the best he could but I'm not sure what his plan was beyond that.

I can only guess that he planned for Jack to stick around, keeping Smokey in the water while he commandeered the submarine and escaped with everyone else, thus leaving Smokey stranded.

I rewatched the last few eps again.

And I think the point of this particular story arc was to "convince" the candidates. Jack had to be convinced of his importance and also the importance of something that needs to be done by him (or others) on the island. Hurley needs to be shown a few things too - he can't save everybody and not everything can be reasoned with (some things are just evil). Kate needs to learn (for some reason) that she's not a candidate. Sawyer needs to have caused a few deaths himself, so that he doesn't just hold Juliet's death against Jack. (Sayid gets redeemed and the Kwons get their romantic death - not much but somebody still needs to have died so that we know what they died for).
