Just an Idea

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Not sure if anyone else has touched on it but I would like to
see a series focused on one central person, from academy days
to admiral over the course of a 4-7 season series. I know it could have disadvantages also. anyone have an opinion of this? sorry if I am re-treading old ground. I have not had a chance to
fully run through all the sections yet

Probably would be a tough sell to focus a sci-fi drama on a single character with the costs involved in developing and producing a series.

I do agree with that, as I said it would be a risk but it would be nice to see a kirk or sisko or picard etc make their way from student to admiral or more. I am sure it will never fly but I thought it would be interesting as either a TV series or even a series of novels or novelettes. That might be the way to go actually. ty for your input/reply

Check out the Horatio Hornblower series(either the books or the ITV/A&E movies). The series focuses on Hornblower throwout his career and was Rodeberry's inspiration for both Kirk and Picard.

Maybe something like the old Highlander series where there is the "modern day" plot line and then there are flashback to earlier periods in the principal characters life and the event all tie together by the end of the episode.

Your idea reminds me a bit of the series "Prime Suspect" with Helen Mirren's police detective character's rise through the ranks and later tragic downfall.

I like your idea very much and I hope you work on it more. I mean when do you want the series to take place? In the past of the Star Trek Universe like the 23rd Century? Or the present like the 24th Century? Or in the future?

I think something like this could work as a flash back based series where the plot takes place in the present but there are certain events that prompt that character to flash back and recollect important past events, similar to "Lost". Or it could be structured like "Batman Begins". I think a series like this would be too difficult and as mentioned cost too much. I could see a Starfleet Academy series like this. Five seasons where the first four are focused on a single main character and a bunch of supporting ones and maybe the fifth season is that character's first assignment after graduation.

I am not all that familiar with Prime Suspect outside of a few
they have shown on public tv here in nyc and I confess i have not watched them all the way through.

I would want to stay close to the TNG/DS9 timeline, I have always felt one of the reasons Enterprise was so poorly received was due to the fact people felt cheated, I mean the producers had spent 2 decades investing in a timeline and then just shrugged it off to jump into " prequel-mania "
So I would set it in the late 24th century perhaps on the verge of the 25th, but that again is just me

I really do appreciate everyone who has left comments, I am truly glad I found this site and all the wonderful people within.

You may be interested in the novel Burning Dreams, by Margaret Wander Bonano (who occasionally posts in the Treklit forum as Garamet). It's about Christopher Pike, Kirk's predecessor on the Enterprise and is set in the prime timeline. Follows his life and Starfleet career.

I don't think such a concept would work as a tv series though.

Thank you, I will look into it, I am familiar with her name and some of her works as she has been a guest numerous times on a sci-fi radio show we have here in nyc called " hour of the wolf " hosted by Jim Freund over wbai and it also can be found online at hourwolf.com, its not a full trek show its more a literary sci-fi program.

Again you may be right, it may not work as a series in fact it probably would not
I just thought it would be an interesting concept

A great show in its own right. I do feel a bit cheated by the last movie though as I ( and I think all ) were led to believe it was going to be a trilogy. now instead they are re-making the original * sigh *

The idea of a Trek series following a single character through his or her career has been discussed before--I talked about it myself once--but that was a long time ago, so it's good to look at it again...

I'm more partial to the idea of a character who has recently graduated from the Academy--young enough to be green and not know everything, but not be a plebe anymore--that brief point early in their career where they are still full of piss & vinegar from their Academy studies before they get the stuffing kicked out of them and really learn how things (and people) truly work. The character need not necessarily become a captain or an admiral at the end of the series, IMO. The series could end with the character becoming a lieutenant commander and the new XO of a frontline starship...

I like the idea, but the character must have a destiny of sorts. A story that follows the life of someone on their way to greatness is worth watching. Maybe from leaving school to retirement, visiting the pivotal events & moments that set the path. Given the nature of the 24C though and all its wonders and achievements, an extraordinary character would have to be mighty special. What would qualify as a amazing to a society with FTL, time travel, teleporters, cybernetics and what have you I have no idea.

Thank you Butters, I agree it would be a hard sell and the
main character would need to be something special as it
would not be a continuing ensemble cast but a rotating one.

We all do have our favorites from each series though, and if it
was done properly, which is to say not by me lol , it could work

I could see a format working that has a single main character who is the only one we see every week, with a rotating expanded cast, any one of whom we might see every 2-3 weeks or in some cases, a few times per season.

Thank you Temis, yes I would think there would be times persons from his/her past would re-appear. plus you never know when a " break-out " character will pop up.and begin garnering screen time, of course to my dismay the new BSG movie is set to this premise, following a young ensign Adama as he enlists in the war against the cylon...if it shows a success no doubt there will be rips on the first-person story idea...
