I Tried Again and Still Didn't Like It

This is what happened to me when I tried to get a friend into Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it was still airing.
Garrett Wang claims that every time he tried to start watching TNG back in the 90s, it somehow just happened to be Code of Honour airing that day.

I don’t understand this point of view. What if the fist episode you choose to watch just happens to be the worst episode of the series, and any other episode you could have potentially enjoyed
Too bad, so sad. Moving on.

There is too much content to wait around for that one episode that goes "Hey, I like this."

While you can't give a show forever to decide if you like it you have to give it a bit of a chance. I remember when I started watching Justified and for the first few episodes it was ok, but seemed like just another police procedural with a twist/crime of the week type show, and then around episode 6 (I think) it pivots and becomes another show entirely and I burned through those six seasons loving every second of the show!

On the flip side I could probably cite several shows I persevered with far too long!

^Bojack Horseman started off rather the same way, with the first six or so episodes being nothing special before it dove into what made it great.

That description reminds me of Person of Interest and Fringe. Starts off as one type of show, but is really hiding something else entirely.

A lot of interesting responses here. I am not a huge fan of LDS, but I have watched it for the last three seasons because I actually do like Mike McMahon and think that he’s honestly trying to make a good animated show while trying not too hard to take it super-seriously.

The issue I have is that I also think there’s a good show here, but it’s buried under all the trying-too-hard humor, the annoying way the characters interact, the insipid cursing, and the constant call-backs that are fine in small doses but progressively less so as the show goes on.

You know what’s a great animated show? South Park. And it’s not because of the potty humor, insipid cursing and the annoying way the characters interacted, because that only lasted until the creators finally realized what they could actually do with the show: turn it from a juvenile crass toilet humor show into a show about social commentary and poking fun at everything that is absurd in our culture. I’m not saying that LDS has to strive for that, but as the show stands at present, there’s very little that I find redeemable or rewatchable about it.

I find the way the characters interact with each other to be incredibly sweet.

This. I genuinely love these guys. There are certain shows where I'd happily just watch the characters sit around all episode just interacting, no plot required. DS9 was one show, Only Murders in the Building is another, and Lower Decks definitely falls into that category.

I don't know what flipped the switch for me. There's so many things that on paper I don't like. I don't like gross humor, which LD has dialed back a lot from early episodes and now uses "to maximum effect" as it were. I don't find swearing inherently funny. But I have to say that LD bleeping the profanity is at least 10x funnier.

I think you have to get enough episodes in to feel the heart that the show has in it's own right as well as the real love that it has for Star Trek. I don't know where this line is between stupid fan service and "we freaking LOVE Star Trek" but LD runs up to that line and jumps on it. (I feel I've typed that sentence before. I'm going to be a hoot in the rest home.)

Plus my kids watch it with me and we all love it. (Teens.) For me it's "Hey, this is Star Trek!" and for them it's, well, also Star Trek, but they LOVE the characters and it's the naughtiest show that I let them watch. (OK, they saw all of Big Bang theory but that wasn't my fault.)

And I can say "Moopsie" at any time and we all dissolve into laughter.
