How do you say 'TOS' ?

doubleohfive

Fleet Admiral
Do you spell it out, ie "T-O-S" or do you say it ie "toss" ?

For as long as I've known the acronym I've said it as a word, like 'toss' even though I spell out DS9 and TNG. Weird.

What do you do?

A certain someone refuses to say TOS, b/c it *is* Star Trek... the original...

But yeah, I'll just say the letters...

I say it like most people do, “Tee-Oh-Ess.”

BTW, if you pronounce it “toss,” it's an acronym. If you just say the letters, it's simply an abbreviation.

Just thought I'd make that clear to all the tossers on this board.

No special treatment. I say all Trek Series abbreviations as they are meant to be said. As abbreviations. And not as acronyms.

I will usual say Toss, Ting, DissNine, VeeGer and then simply Enterprise.

Guy I met at a convention ten odd years ago advocated First Trek, Next Trek, Deep Trek and VeeGer Trek. To this day the original series is First Trek in my mind.

Never occurred to me, but I sub-vocalize "theoss". It's like I start saying the original series, but it's too long so I switch to the acronym mid-title. Tee-oh-ess just sounds wrong...I'm not one of those people, but the show's title isn't "Star Trek: The Original Series" after all, and it just sounds tinny to my ear.

Tee-En-Gee
Dee-Ess-Nine
Voy
Ent

...The last two are abbreviations of single words after all.

Toss, Tass, Tee En Gee, Dee Ess Nine, Voyager, Enterprise. That's how I say them. Not sure why TOS is an acronym, and the others aren't. Probably because of the vowel in the middle. It's possible to pronounce it as one word.

I type TOS, but I never speak the acronym/abbreviation. It's always "The Original Series" verbally. Ditto for TAS, TNG ("Next Gen", for short), Voy, and Ent.

DS9 is the exception, as the characters always refer to the station as Dee-Ess-Nine.

I don't think I've ever referred to it as TOS when speaking -- if clarification is needed, I pretty much always just say "the original series". When I read it, though, in my head I hear it as "Tee Oh Ess".

In speech, I'll usually abbreviate Deep Space Nine to "DS9", and occasionally I'll call The Next Generation "TNG", but I've never abbreviated Voyager or Enterprise.
