ENT in XI

middyseafort said:
If anything it should be as simple as this isn't the first ship named Enterprise. It would satisfy naysayers and yaysayers alike because it really isn't the first ship named E whether or not you like ENT or consider it part of that damned canon thing.
I guess this is just the ENT fans looking for a shout-out... someone mentions that the ship was named after Archer's ship, nevermind a centuries-long naval tradition in Britain and the U.S. of having ships named Enterprise.

I don't know why they need to discuss the origin of the ship's name anyway. Y'know, it's the friggin' Enterprise. :p

Aside from the many insider tales our very own Therin (Therin of Andor) has recalled, and the behind-the-scenes stories about Berman's casual mockery and general insouciance concerning TOS from writers involved with TNG, there is one man who I have spoken to personally, someone who I hold in high regard. Emerson Bixby, who happens to be son of TOS writer Jerome Bixby. In addition to being a writer, director and producer, he owns a big movie theater in southern California where I live no more than 5 miles from. In fact, I had the pleasure of meeting him when he screened Wrath of Khan there last year. His father died in 1998, but not before Rick humiliated him. Oh yes, Brannon Braga gets a lot of shit for his ignorance of TOS, but that was his only sin, if you can even call it a sin. He told Gene Roddenberry this during TNG and Gene encouraged him not to watch TOS in order to keep TNG fresh, a rule Berman gladly obeyed up until the later half of ENT.

That proves nothing. Keep spinning it though..Don't let any facts get in the way of a good bash, eh?

And you neither contradict or prove anything to the otherwise. Keep selectively closing your eyes and ears though...don't let factual first-hand accounts, reality or the truth get in the way of your unfounded bashing and unprovoked personal insults of those of us in-the-know.

If the rest of you guys want to hear more detailed stories I've heard from Emerson, including how Rick humiliated his father on the Paramount lot, I'd be more than happy to make a thread in the TOS forum. I think I already told everyone about the f-bomb James Doohan and Jerome Bixby got away with on Day of the Dove.

In the know of what? We all know why GR wanted to keep the newer writers from watching TOS. That doesn't=sweeping it under the rug. Every writer and ever subsequent series talks about TOS in reverence. Why do we get all these little nods to the series in ENT, DS9, TNG, VOY. Piller, Moore, Sussman, et al. are on record as being huge TOS fans. Berman has gone on record as not being a fan of certain aspects of TOS but thoughout four series has held strongly to GR's beliefs and his vision. All the Berman haters love to ignore that fact and fail to acknowledge his hand in DS9's success.

YOU are the one who needs to prove your assertion of TOS being swept under the rug, since you were the one who posted that drive by comment.

"Those of us in-the-know???" You've got to be fucking kidding!

Scotty says fuck in Day of the Dove? Cool. Which part?

I don't think they should go to any great length to mention ENTERPRISE, and they probably won't. If they do though, it really won't matter. It is a fact that the show was on the air for four years, so some passing reference might come up. But I don't think it likely :vulcan:

I'm a big fan of ENT, and I started this thread. The more I read and the more I think about it, I'd enjoy it if we saw two characters walking across the Academy campus, for instance, and in the background you can see "Archer Hall" or something. Something small and not intrusive like that would be wonderful.

Putting it aside, on ice, evolving past the source, or being swept under the rug for most of the 90s, as oppose to all of it. Whatever you or I want to call it. If you want to be ridiculously upset by my choice of words and debate semantics, be my guest. Everyone else is fine.

Where did I say everyone involved with the spin-off series hated TOS with a passion? I'm not even sure I could say that about Rick Berman. At best, Rick simply didn't think highly of it and was mostly dismissive of material and some people involved with the show. When we saw references or huge nods to TOS, it was usually because it was a significant anniversary.

Where does he go "on record" (interviews, press releases) saying he didn't like certain aspects of TOS? We know he supposedly said things in off-the-cuff comments according to people involved with the show, but I've never seen him come out and actually admit to some of these. The closest I've heard is in the commentary for Broken Bow, where he gently suggests we should ignore the visual differences between ENT and TOS. He doesn't go into detail though. In probably his last interview concerning Star Trek, he said he didn't hate TOS but fesses up that he hasn't seen all of it. Whatever his true feelings may be, he's very coy about it.

And while we're at it, where did I discredit Berman's involvement with DS9? And where did I claim he didn't follow Gene's vision?

I just did and you acknowledged it. You just didn't agree with my choice of words. And that's fine.

UWC Defiance seems to have handled this a lot better. One would think I flamed you personally.

Number6 said:"Those of us in-the-know???" You've got to be fucking kidding!

Semantics again. If you've listened to a single story or piece of triva recalled by people involved with the show, you automatically meet that criteria. It could be on DVD or on paper, or in person. I've met a relative of someone involved with the show and have submitted previously unreleased information to Memory Alpha because of it. One of the things this relative confirmed was the story that Rick Berman, for the most part, wanted to get as far away from TOS as possible. Something his father found out the hard way. That is my confirmation from an insider. If it isn't valid, that's your opinion.

When Scotty freaks out on the bridge. Whether he actually said it or not is up to you, but Bixby and Doohan felt they got away with an expletive.

^^^
AC84 seems to be know what I know. The history of Berman and his attitudes towards the material has been reported on this BBS more than once.

Small and unintrusive just isn't ENTs style. All their Earth settings look like they were designed by Albert Speer.

No retconing please.
I don't care if Enterprise happend before TOS.
This isn't a Enterprise movie, it's a TOS movie.
If you don't like that, that's your problem.

* Sigh, is this the kind of stuff we'll have to put up w/ all the way 'till 12/25/8 ? *

No, but some TOS fans have pet theories. ;)

Or confirmation from insiders.

"Insiders" being relative in this case. You're far from the only one hereabouts with such experiences, not everyone's are secondhand and everyone's experience does not agree.

It remains a matter of pet theories and opinions.

Basically, I agree with you. But just imagine you see, like has been suggested, some hall named "Archer" in the background, without anyone mentioning it aloud. Most ENT fans would be happy and the rest wouldn't even notice. Such a thing would not be enough to spawn any kind of discussion, or even drive people to not see the movie.

But perhaps I am mistaken...

The point i'm trying to make is, is it really needed ?

Will fans storm the gates at Paramount because there's no mention to Enterprise at all in the new film, not even a nod and wink to it ?

* I do have a life outside of Trek just so folks know *

the argument might be made, that if you are going to wankily reference any of the NG series, it should be TNG, which had audience support.

But again, why waste brain cells on any suck wankery. Use them for a decent TOS story, and let the fanboys insert their own theories later.
