I like both, but there's a catch. I only like Discovery seasons 1 and 2, and Strange New Worlds. Discovery kinda jumped the shark in season 3, at least for me.

I like both, well enough, but neither hit that sweet spot that TNG or DS9 did for me. The jury is still out for SNW. I want to like it more than I actually do. I'm not too bummed by that because TNG and DS9 didn't get consistently good until their respective third seasons (the same could be said about PIC and arguably, about ENT), and I'm holding out hope for SNW. As for DISCO, I think it took a lot of big swings and had some big misses, but still has a lot to offer. I don't think SNW has yet had a season as gripping as DISCO's first season.

I would be amazed, and probably buy a lottery ticket if it hit 7 seasons.

5 is kind of the new magic number. 7 seasons was a sweet spot in the age of syndication. 5 seasons is good for the streaming age, as the actors costs tend to go up after that.

I'm somewhat 50/50 on SNW. I like it, and I appreciate the idea of it, going back to being episodic. But I found S2 to be a let down from S1, with an overreliance on silly episodes... and I *LIKE* silly episodes. One of my real issues with Discovery was that it had to be super serious grimdark all the time. But SNW S2 went a bit overboard. Still, I am anticipating S3... and hoping for maybe more like, 1 silly episode. If we an old school 22 episode season, yeah do a bunch but... we don't have time for that.

An exaggeration. Fair enough, i'll walk that back. More "Overly serious, not allowed to have any fun." At least earlier one. I've always maintained the show does improve as it goes on.
It was serious but had fun. Definitely had some smile moments for me in Season 1. Same with Season 2.

Season 3 did a better job balancing it.

We got 5 now because Disco the first StarTrek since 2001 is only 5 seasons.......

Or it could be number of eps. yes ST: D got 5 seasons, but the first 3 had 14 to 145 episodes so in 5 seasons ST: D made 65 total episodes.

If it's episode count (and using ST: D as a baseline - ST: SNW could get 6 or if Paramount still sees it's still really popular on the platform when the time for a decision comes up, could go 6 or 7 seasons for a final total of 60 or 70 episodes.

Yeah, it really just depends on what the actors contracts are. That is the actual real answer. If they were contracted for x amount of episode or y amount of seasons, they will certainly want significantly more money to continue. So... alot of times the shows just go ahead and end.

Odd business strategy on the part of the actors though.
Actor: "I'm more valuable now, pay me more."
Studio: "Nah, show cancelled."
Actor: "Whelp... guess I go start over again."
