Was anything.about them revealed that I missed?
Normally you would.expect to learn something about what their enhanced abilities are.
What is the purpose.of Detmers device...doesn't have it in MU. What is Ariam?

As others have mentioned, it is probably a result of injuries sustained during the Battle of the Binary Stars, since she didn't have it on the Shenzhou, either.

Based on this concept artwork, perhaps it is to reinforce a damaged skull?

I could also see it as something that takes the visual input from her synthetic eye, and sends it to the visual cortex, which is located at the back of the brain.

Gives a big speech about even though she is human, she has always been treated as a second-class citizen by the other Terrans because of her cybernetic implants. It's written by Kirsten Beyer, they've made that ridiculous "it's canon unless we think of a better idea to contradict it on the show later!" claim. But I think that's the most recent info on how the writers currently conceive of her.

Which drives me nuts! Airiam has a cool look and I'm interested to learn more about her, but it's such a core tenant of Trek that humans have just decided to be humans. If you want to blow that up by introducing halfway-to-Borg humans, do it thoughtfully and for a compelling story reason! In this case it's obvious they just had a cool visual and ran with it without thinking it through.

They're glorified extras in S1.

I've never really understood the resistance to that idea. The series has othe main characters. Some are on the bridge. Some are not. No different than any other series.

We don't wonder about the bridge extras on TOS or TNG and deride those shows for not giving us more about them. Additionally, DSC is only 13-15 episodes, so you don't have time to explore the ins and outs of every inconsequential background character.

Interesting extras are good. I like what JJ Trek did, I like the other interesting extras on Disco (whatever happened to Officer Freakishly Giant Head?). It's perfectly possible to be visually interesting and also respect the basic facts of the universe. An updated Ferengi would also look interesting, but they shouldn't end up as a bridge officer character either.

And just for the record, I do love Airiam, as an alien (which is what I tell myself she is when I'm watching the show -- my criticism is really just for the comic -- during the show I thought it was so smart of them to exclude Airiam from the MU, she doesn't really fit there)

I'm honestly not sure where I got this from (read it here, some press junket, something, dunno), but somehow I've been under the assumption that Airiam (my OCD thanks to those who are spelling her name correctly) is a New Human - one of a group of humans who have chosen to uplift themselves by technology and whatever other means are available. At some point between "now" and the late 2260s, one of them is going to do something that will make Starfleet decide to ban them from starship service - I believe the suggestion was that they turned out to be too willing to empathize with adversarial alien species, and thus they didn't seem like they could be counted on to choose their own crew over problems they might face.

I'm torn between hoping the reason they were banned is Airiam, because that would be a pretty good basis for character development, and hoping it isn't, because I *like* the character, so far. Then again, even if she isn't, maybe seeing the fallout on her from whatever happens could still be an interesting arc for her.

Nah, it's Battle of the Network Stars, and soon we're going to see the crews of the Shenzhou, the Discovery, and the Enterprise competing in the tug-of-war and rope climbs and a river race and stuff like that. (I actually *would* like to see this - CBS, if you're watching, make this a season break extra between Seasons 2 and 3. )
