CLOSING THE DEAL

Okay...your friend (in my case my wife) is willing to watch one episode of STAR TREK (any series). This is your ONE CHANCE to suck them into our TREK universe...

What one episode (two parters/two hour episodes are not allowed ) would you use to close the deal..and make them a fan???

Go zubby!

Of course the problem is - if you show them the best first, they are just as likely to go "man the rest of this is shite".

Show them the Last episode of DS9 Season 5 I forgot the name but it's a good episode and a giant cliffhanger.

I'd say first figure out what kind of stories your wife likes. Would she prefer an action oriented story, a romantic tale, a mystery, a political or cultural episode? Thriller, comedy etc?

Maybe the easiest would be to take her favourite movie and try to find an episode that has a similar set up

If it's your wife it'd have to be City on the Edge....don't show her BOBW or something with a lot of phasers...that's for when a 14 year-old says they want to try Trek!

Okay...here were my picks..

1. For a softie? City on the Edge/The Offspring or Vistor

2. For a 14 year old kid. Way of the Warrior. It acts as a good second pilot for DS9. You can go back and show 'bajoran' centric episodes later

3. For those who might be swayed by a message? Measure of a Man or Offspring, or maybe even Devil in The Dark

It might also help to consider the type of characters she likes.
I don't say this to be a basher, but TNG is so pure, she might be bored if she prefers friction between characters (which, IMO, make them more interesting to watch).

In that case, I would go with a DS9 episode such as "Duet" or Enterprise (such as "Strange New World") or TOS ("Tholian Web," "The Naked Time") -- tho' the retro-special effects might not thrill her, depending on her age.

DS9 would be hard to use to sell someone on TREK, unless you use EMISSARY. Duet would be good, I suppose. But with out the backstory of the characters and races, when considering Ds9, it would be hard to get them into DS9 with out the past.

Thats why I think WAY OF THE WARRIOR is good because it kind of retells who is who on the show. Yes, it doesn't nearly touch the 'occupation' info that the first three season goes into, but you cant please anyone.

TOS is so well know, I think it would be an easier sell. But, then again, the 'old' look of the show might turn them off as well.

Darmok

For me it sums up perfectly what Trek is about.

Measure of a Man or The Drumhead are also good choices though one has to say that these episodes rank among the best Trek has to offer.

TOS--The Devil in the Dark
TNG--The Measure of a Man or Darmok
Voyager--Living Witness
Enterprise--Vox Sola
