CLOSING THE DEAL

City on the Edge of Forever is great, but come on--is it exploring strange new worlds? It's just a time travel story. It's a fine episode, but does it really showcase what Trek is all about? Not in my book.

CotEoF is definetly not what Star TRek is about and I can't imagine anyone liking the story when they don't know how good friends kirk/spock etc are. Time travel is an exception in Trek.

Yeah, so much of an exception that an entire Trek box set is devoted to time travel. Come on, it's a recurring theme throughout all 5 series.

It's a recurring exception.

Just because coteof is a fan favorite doesn't mean it's a newbie favorite. I'd venture to say it's a boring episode. Don't use TOS at all to make new fans sorry all old timers but TOS is out dated, just because it has nostalgic value doesn't mean it's not out dated. The movies are good though, a great new fan picture would be movie 6

That's an oxymoron. If something recurs constantly, it ceases to become an exception.

I agree with you here--a lot of people who lack imagination and have been raised on films and tv with much better sfx would be turned off by TOS, totally ignoring the strength of the storytelling. I say this as someone who prefers DS9 to TOS, so I'm not one of those hard core TOSers who only accept the first 79 eps and the first 6 films as 'real trek.'

My problem is that you said time travel in trek is an exception. It most definitlely is not.

Of course it's an exception, look at every series individually, how many times does it happen?

It's a regular exception because you now there will be 1 or 2 in every series but that's all. It's nothing that a series is based on

Of course none of the series are based entirely on time travel, but it's a recurring storytelling staple in trek--akin to Borg or Q themed episodes. Hmmmm, they did box sets of those too. Are they exceptions? Time travel episodes are as common as Romulan episodes (probably more so), and the first couple seasons of Enterprise did have the Temporal Cold War, didn't it?

While no trek series is based on time travel, it is a recurring theme. It recurs more on, say, Voyager or Enterprise than the first 3 series because Brannon Braga had a hard-on for time travel stories, but it's always been a part of trek.

Let's see:

The original series had 5 episodes of time travel (6.3% of total 79 episodes)

TNG had 12 episodes of time travel (6.7% of total 178 episodes)

DS9 had 10 episodes of time travel (5.6% of total 176 episodes)

Voy had 12 episodes of time travel (6.9% of total 172 episodes)

Ent had 12 episodes of time travel (12.2% of total 98)

Movies had 3 involving time travel (30% of total 10)*

* which if reports are true about the new film - changes to 4 - (36.6% of 11).

^^^Thanks for looking all that up. I considered doing it, but I'm in the final hour of a 12-hour overnight shift and pretty tired.

That works out to 51 episodes out of 704 episodes (not including the animated series). Sounds about right.

Are people in this thread serious? do you honestly think showing episodes from TOS is going to win them over? we're in the 21st century guys and gals, unless you grew up with TOS its going to look crap. People nowadays want action, great CGI, something they can relate to and newer deeper storylines.

Don't use TOS on anyone born after 1980

Untrue. I was born in '86 and TOS is by far the best one, as far as I'm concerned. Most of my friends, who are all around my age, agree with me. In fact, aside from TNG, my pals can't stand any of the spin-offs.
