Maybe a little early to start this thread, but I'm doing so now because Brie Larson has been officially announced as Captain Marvel!

Awesome! I imagine since she's been cast so early that we'll be seeing Carol Danvers pop up in at least one other MCU film before branching out into her own. :techman:

Damn, that's a pretty good quality video.

Loved the group photo. Everyone looks so thrilled to be there. :D

And yes, great news that we finally have our Captain Marvel!

Seeing as this was at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 panel, I'm surprised we haven't heard anything about a trailer yet.

Excellent! Brie is awesome. :)

Nice to see so many faces there - especially Benedict Wong!

I haven't been keeping close tabs on all the news and developments, but I was always under the impression that Danvers was set to be introduced in one of the other Marvel films. Is that just a presumption on my part, or have they every officially commented on it one way or the other?

I have no opinion on the casting itself (beyond the fact that she looks that part) since looking at her IMDB page I don't think I've actually seen her in anything. Heard good things about 'Room' though and I gather the Scott Pilgrim movie has one of those "love it or hate it" type of cult followings, so I may now have more of a reason to check those out sooner rather than later.

I don't think anything about Carol Danvers has been confirmed at this point other than she will be played by Brie Larson and she will appear in Captain Marvel. I'm pretty sure the idea that she'll first appear in another Marvel film prior to Captain Marvel is just a presumption on all our parts, though likely a correct one.

The Infinity War duology is scheduled to start filming in November. Assuming Danvers doesn't pop up in any post-credits scenes for Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, or Black Panther, I would be very surprised if she doesn't make her first appearance in the first of those two movies. Captain Marvel is scheduled to release between them.

This is a conspiracy theory based on 12 seconds in my mind.

Carol Danvers was around as a foil for 9 years before picking up the Ms. Marvel identity.

9 years!

Cinematic Carol Danvers might turn up before Cinematic Captain Marvel.

I can't help but find myself wondering what the actual plot of this movie could be. I mean the origin story (if you could even call it that) of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel is so convoluted and messed up that there's no way they'll be sticking to that.

I've not read a huge amount of Marvel comics and so I'm only really familiar with her as an ancillary character in other titles (mostly Alias) and that one episode of the X-Men cartoon where they showed how Rogue stole her powers. So I have to ask, are there any big Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel story lines that seem ripe for adaptation? Preferably one that doesn't involve trans-dimensional rape. Come to that, does she have anything resembling a rogues gallery, or even a nemesis (aside from creepy-rapist-dream-person)?

I suppose it depends whether or not her movie will be 100% standalone (in which case it'll probably be an origin story) or whether she'll show up in Infinity War and some incident there will imbue her with her powers (and knock her into a coma, since I gather that's a thing that happened at least once) leaving the film to show her coping with/embracing the change.

I think part of the reason a lot of us are assuming she'll get introduced first in another movie pre-powers is because we'd rather skip the usual origin story movie formula and get right to business.

That's what I figured. I mean, Kevin Feige may have specifically been answering the question of Captain Marvel appearing before her solo movie. Doesn't look like he said Carol Danvers wouldn't show up before then. ;)

That would be my preference. Have her work for NASA or something in the first Infinity War movie and then have her turn into Captain Marvel in her own solo.

The Air Force Officer angle is good, she's a veteran, but Carol was also a reporter for the Daily Bugle. if we skip to the end, would the character be allowed to overlap-on/use the Bugle sets from Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Man II?

Sony and Marvel are really friendly, right?

So, I watched the prequel movie last night, "Room". I did NOT like all the changes they made to the character. Carol Danvers' back story is NOTHING like that in the comics!!!:mad::mad:

Doesn't seem like the ideal way to launch the character to me. Between Spider-man and Superman the reporter/superhero angle feels kind of cliched, and it wouldn't seem to dovetail very well with a character whose going to get cosmic power and wind up dealing with a lot of alien things. Was this a big part of her character in the comics?

Just exploring. I'm not married to the idea. :)

I pivoted from NASA, because NASA isn't what it used to be.

If Carol is getting her powers off a leaking alien/alien technology, NASA hasn't been about manned flight for years. So if we actually want her in an earthmade ship, maybe have Danvers working for a new billionaire, Stark, China or S.H.I.E.L.D which will actually propel this woman physically at an alien encounter like a hero more so than an abducteee?

For this film, the long red sash on her costume will have to go. It is not a good idea for someone who has to engage in battle.

The movie people are going to be dicks.

They're going to design something new, loosely based on one of her old costumes, and then the comics will be forced to lock pace and adjust Captain Marvel's formal wardrobe appropriately.

The current costume is fine, but I'm not a fan of the faux hawk, which is hardly ever shown/used anymore anyway.
