California Class. TOS style.

Acenos

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
What would the USS Cerritos look like if it we're a TOS era ship?

Because I think the basis for it's configuration was derived from one of Matt Jefferies sketches:

Top right and middle right are beauties.

Great to see a clean circular saucer and clean nacelles without all the over-detailing you usually see these days.

I agree with you here.

But at the same time...

The Cerritos looks TNG through-and-through. There's nothing First Contact (or later) looking about it. It looks appropriately late-'80s/early-'90s retro.

The approach LD is taking with its design and the approach DSC took with its design during its first two seasons couldn't be more different.

Mike McMahan directly stated the design was based on the Reliant from TWOK.

I know the Reliant's design is not a million miles away from the Cerritos, but they don't look all that closely related either. Certainly not to a point where I would say one is a “variation“ of the other. The Nebula class looks like the perfect combination of the Reliant configuration and the Next Generation aesthetic. The Cerritos looks more like its own thing.

I always took the Nebula as the TNG-era Reliant. Yeah, the Nebula has a secondary hull and a visible deflector dish but the general look of it in comparison to the Galaxy (as the 24th Connie) is sort of there even with the pod section over the primary hull.

Thankfully they never followed through on that "The vulcans let us borrow some of their tech" idea for a TNG era ship.

Not really seeing the Reliant inspiration. The Reliant is a beauty, the Cerritos looks cumbersome and inelegant.

^ Still a cool little ship.

The Cerritos is reminiscent of the Soyuz class more than the Miranda, just by the absence of a roll bar.

But in a general saucer with nacelles underneath way, it's got slight Reliant or Shenzhou vibes, and that's OK.

It's also got elements of the Oberth with the "secondary hull" bit with no obvious connection to the primary hull other than "well, maybe the turbolift goes through the engine supports or... transporters?"

I thought the same until they revealed the Akira class. While it does have those hull catamarans, the mean hunkered down look complete with a roll bar weapons pod really has that Reliant vibe for me.
