"Photons be Free" was a holoprogram written by the Doctor in the "Voyager" episode "Author, Author." Obviously this thread will contain spoilers for that episode.
The Doctor's holonovel paints an extremely unflattering version of his shipmates. But to boot, his holonovel is also hilariously badly made. Katanay (based on Chakotay) has a crazy snake tattoo on his cheek; but if you look carefully, the design is so sloppily slapped onto his face that it runs over his mouth. "Three of Eight" has red hair that clashes horribly with her burgundy catsuit. Then there's Lt. Marseille (Tom Paris) with that porn-stache. Everyone's hair looks terrible, and the story is ludicrously over-the-top.
"Author, Author" ends with the Doctor recalling the program, but not before hundreds of people back home have already played it. Allegedly it was extremely popular; I wonder if it was popular in the way as "the Room," "Plan 9 from Outer Space" and the "Star Wars Holiday Special"--as a "so-bad-it's-good" laugh fest.
Perhaps some Cerritos crewmembers played "Photons be Free" before it was recalled. Maybe copies still exist on the black market. Or maybe Rutherford dug up a copy while onboard Voyager in "Twovix." In any case, let's suppose some Cerritos crew have played "Photons be Free." What do you think they'd make of it?
Shax would likely be furious at the inaccurate and offensive portrayal of a Bajoran in "Katanay."
I feel Mariner would absolutely loose her sh*t laughing when "Captain Jenkins" shoots that crewman. Maybe they all would. She'd probably love the captain's walk of weapons as well.
Seeing Tendi or Dr. T'Ana's reaction to that opening scene in Sickbay, and the backpack mobile emitter, would probably be interesting.
Thoughts?
