Best and Worst of Star Trek: Picard

a) Regarding Romulans cybernetics and artificial intelligence across Romulan society, the PIC take is inconsistent with what was seen and said on TNG and VOY. And isn't discussed by Starfleet at all
b) The idea that Starfleet did not want Seven in Starfleet because she's Borg, yet Icheb who was also Borg was allowed to serve in Starfleet.
a) why are Romulans uniform? Doctrinal issues can be adjusted depending whomever is in power.
b) Icheb was not Borg as long as Seven was.

For all three seasons, the best was seeing how the seemingly insurmountable problems posed at the beginning of the season finally got resolved.

The worst would have to be the gratuitous invocation of the eye-scream trope in "Stardust City Rag." And the fact that the Una McCormack's prequel novel is the first (and hopefully the last) example I've ever encountered of a superbly written novel that I sincerely wish I could un-read.

So, an anti-synth government comes to power on Romulus on the eve of a supernova and no one notices? And the Federation just presses on with building the synth ferries, knowing the Romulan government is anti-synth? And that Romulans are prideful and would rather die than accept help i.e "the Romulan way"?
b) Icheb was not Borg as long as Seven was.
Does that matter?

History is full of government changes over less.

Does that matter?
I would say yes because it would indicate how long a person was under that "sphere of influence."

Sorry but I feel exactly the opposite. Shaw reeked of a failed attempt at a Dr. House knockoff, and I cringed when he was trying so hard to snark like a Marvel character. His death was my Christmas joy.

For me the best thing was Seven of Nine, and the worst was spending an entire season in modern times. I'm guessing it was to conserve the budget for the grand reunion in Season 3.

The best of Picard:
Season 2 episode 1
scene from 10 Forward in Los Angeles in the 24th century
lots of different people, no poverty, clean air, functional ecosystem, no one getting exploited, killed or otherwise hurt
I want that so much for myself and everyone else

Worst:
  • Captain Shaw, AKA when you order your Dr. House on Wish. His attempts to Marvel are cringeworthy, and his death was long overdue.
  • An entire season in the boring modern world I tune into "Star Trek" to escape from. I understand it was probably to conserve the budget for that epic TNG reunion in Season 3, but still irritating.
  • Killing Hugh for cheap drama. No, I have not consumed any novels or other media focused on Hugh. I never gave him much thought before "Picard." But just when he was getting interesting, they killed him, seemingly for shock value.
  • Snubbing Sela in a TNG sequel that heavily deals with Romulans and Picard's past angst. I assume Denise Crosby just wasn't available.
  • Changing command red to that dull maroon. Why.
Best:
  • Ditching the book continuity and building off from where "Voyager" left the saga...I've ranted about this before so I'll try not to repeat myself. In short, I love how PIC used the "Voyager" finale as a starting point for building its new continuity, and overall seems to respect "Voyager" as a legitimate chapter in the "Trek" saga, rather than treating it like an embarrassment that needs to be retconned.
  • Seven of Nine. Ranger and captain aren't what I'd have thought for Seven, but god knows it's better than the way she was treated in the book continuity. Her romance with Raffi was better written than any of her love stories on "Voyager," and I'm pumped to see Captain Seven in command.
  • The Romulans. I've always starved for diversity within "Star Trek's" monoculture planets, and this delivered. From the differing foreheads, to the subculture of samurai nuns, to the solid distinction that a people are not their government.
  • Worf becoming Klingon Machete! I was never a huge fan of Worf, but now I am.
  • Elnor: 'Nuff said.
  • The Confederation: I'm trash for alternate timelines. Even clichéd and poorly thought-put ones.
  • "The sheer fucking hubris!"

Best: Third season uniforms were pretty sharp in my opinion. I appreciated that elements from the DS9 series were referenced but not significantly altered or retconned. I enjoyed hearing musical portions form the First Contact theme in the credits.

Worst: Poor writing throughout the series. Season 3 felt like fan fiction, season 2 was just plain bad, and I'm still trying to figure out what they were attempting to accomplish with season 1.

Worst: In S3, Jack's hallucinations look like something out of "Stranger Things." I'm sure plenty of scary movies and shows have visuals like that, but Stranger Things is one that has been big in pop culture in recent years. So I wouldn't be surprised if that was a source of inspiration.

The worst:
Everything seemed a little off. I can't really put my finger on this but it didn't feel like Star Trek a lot of the time. But not all of time. Mainly the first two seasons.
Dull side characters.
Legacy characters recast
Forced tension between Riker and Picard in s3, didn't come natural in s3e3. "you've jus killed us all"
Come on Riker, how about take some responsibility too.
Somebody turn a light on the bridge of the titan. Voyager, defiant and Enterprise E all hard darker bridges but least you still could see the set lol
F-bombs

The Best:
Legacy characters
Worf was the standout. Give the man he's own show dam it.
Enterprise-D
TNG nostalgia

Not really the epilogue I would have hoped for. Bit of a mixed bag. Had its moments of good and bad. Did it give me the highs of Tng and First Contact ? Not really. Maybe it's me. TNG was my teenage obsession. I'm older and maybe wiser. I'm also more cynical and sarcastic. I'm also not easy to please. Im a typical fan who's never happy. Moan when they change things. Moan when they give us fan service.

Kudos for honesty.

I should watch S2 again.

I keep thinking this.

I don’t think a rewatch will open my eyes and suddenly I’ll think it’s brilliant, but I would like to watch it again now I have a bit of distance and perspectives.

There’s a lot of good stuff in it, but as I recall it just doesn’t quite cohere. Most of that which I disliked revolved around Brent Spiner being given the opportunity to play the villain.
