On the one hand, good news that it's being released.
On the other, they seem to be limiting themselves to the number of people who can watch it

They're assuming enough fans will subscribe to CBS All Access that the subscription fees will pay for the show. That it's going subscription is not surprising. It's a little disappointing that it's on CBS and not Netflix, but I guess CBS wants to keep the revenue in house.

Is there a way that this topic's title can be changed to read "January 17, 2017" instead of just January 17? From the look of that, people will assume it's January 17, 2016.
Anyway, what a Monday morning! Absolute proof that a new Trek TV series will be debuting in a little over a year! I guess CBS finally realized that Trek is not a dying "franchise" (I hate that work in relation to ST, but I can't think of any other descriptor at the moment.) Fantastic!

The exclusive streaming thing seems more like an attempt to draw attention to their service now to try to build an audience on the platform. If it fails to take off by the time the show premieres I am very doubtful they'll hold to that plan.

Voyager was also the studio's way of trying to get viewers to tune into UPN. Don't forget, it was the flagship series that launched the network back in 1995.

My fiancee and I pay for Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime right now. I'm just not certain a new Star Trek series alone can convince me to pay more for streaming services. It had better be frikkin amazing.

The announcement seems to make it clear that there is room for this to be multi platform, so while it may premier on CBS.COM, we may see it also show up on Showtime, or even Netflix at some point after each episode's initial release....

By multiple platforms, I believe it means "CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come."

The only way I see this working is if they are willing to take some pretty serious losses early on and depend on second-run sources of income to keep it going. If the platform fails though, they've basically hamstrung the series in its biggest market (the US) and all but assured it won't continue elsewhere.
Netflix already had millions of subscribers before they started creating original content and weren't depending on a political thriller to convince people to sign up. UPN was already being broadcast over the air and cost nothing for people to tune in.
