New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 2017

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

TPTB aren't going to make something so obviously directed to the portion of the fan base that can't cope with nuTrek.

I mean, it was named "Prime." No out outside of this board gives a fuck about "prime" or "nu".

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Orci and Kurtzman produced Transformers Prime, so the name isn't impossible to imagine. But I agree, the name is very unlikely. And if CBS really had a ship design ready to show weeks after the announcement they would have had it ready to show with the announcement.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

To be fair, that looks like it's just a blurred image of the Enterprise-E. But yeah, it's too obviously exactly what a large portion of the fandom wants to see, and so alas is a too-obvious fake.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Large portion? Eh.
Vocal portion? Damn skippy.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

God that image is crap.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Somebody already posted a thread about that picture in General Trek last week.

It's definitely fan-made.

Hey guys,

Daniel here, editor of www.treknews.de - we've reported about this poster today (which started this thread) .

http://www.treknews.de/treknews/newspro-treknews/static/145026064411248.php

As of 3:30pm the person responsible for the content on www.startrek.de has confirmed the official nature of the poster and title towards me.

While I have huge doubts myself I cannot ignore that official response from startrek.de personnel - any thoughts?

In my post from above...

In fact, although the link to the image no longer works, it seems it was first posted a month ago, right after the announcement from CBS. Definitely a fake.

https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/3rbbzm/teaser_poster_for_new_series_star_trek_prime/

The post at the link I provided was dated November 3, 2015. Just one day after the announcement by CBS of the new series. Since the link led to a page saying the post was missing, I clicked on the user that submitted it. There, I found a post dated November 23, 2015 made by him with this link...

http://imgur.com/gallery/09lYt?lr=1448298339

This is the same link that has started the speculation. Because of the previous post by him on November 3rd and the comments made I assume that his initial post included the same poster.

I say it at least makes the legitimacy of this poster suspect.

lol hold your horses. the same person from startrek.de that confirmed the validity just a few hours ago emailed me and told me "oh, you're right. not official."

so much for your trust in an official star trek website :(

Another question of budget...will the show use a lot of virtual sets to save money like Blood and Chrome?

RAMA
Good question. When I rented the Blood and Chrome DVD I looked at the special features. The actors-in cold weather gear-were shown standing in front of a green screen. Later, the snowy/icy surface of the planet was added to the image.

I think there is quite a bit of potential in this techniqe. An alternative to a planetary surface that looks like California or Vancouver B.C.
Green screens have their place; not everything can be done on set or on location. I'm sure that for this show, they"ll have the budget to construct real standing sets, with the occasional CG set or CG supplemented.

Intl. day & date TV launch model?

How will CBS Studios International/CBS Global Distribution Group handle distribution differently from CBSAA??

The X-Files 2016 event series (6 episodes = just over 4 hours of actual program) just announced their International distribution strategy for January 2016:
Fox International Channels said it will air the new sci-fi fave The X-Files day-and-date across more than 60 countries. The six-episode event series, again helmed by original creator and showrunner Chris Carter and reuniting FBI Agents Mulder and Sculler aka David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, will air on FIC’s Fox channels immediately following the January 24 debut on Fox in the U.S.

The series will return as part of a two-night special event across all licensed territories within the international Fox portfolio starting on January 25

Fox has used the day & date TV launch model on other shows including The Walking Dead, Wayward Pines, Scream Queens and Empire. The upcoming Outcast, which Fox International Studios developed with Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) for Cinemax in the U.S. and Fox channels internationally, will also employ that model. Fox is available as a linear channel and non-linear offering in over 340 million homes across the US and virtually all international TV markets.

6 episodes is a lot less than 12 or 18.

other space opera on TV

Looks like Star Trek will have another ongoing space opera as competition during it's first season initial run since
RAMA mentioned ‘The Expanse’ Renewed For Season 2 By Syfy.

season 2 will be 13 episodes in "early 2017". The same time as Star Trek untitled '17 season 1. I think they just don't want to commit to a start date until CBS announces when Star Trek will begin on CBSAA.

The Expanse, Westworld, Netflix's Lost in Space, X-Files...

Star Trek is going to have some good competition going into their first season.

Well, X-Files will be done by then (assuming rumours of the new, younger agents introduced in the six-parter are primed for a new show don't pan out.)

But Syfy also has two other space opera shows - Dark Matter and Killjoys - which, if renewed, would air their third seasons in 2017, and Syfy is also considering a Hyperion series, an Old Man's War series, and other projects. The new Star Trek could be just one of a number of space shows by the time it premieres, whereas they were almost non-existent this time last year.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

The producers of any Star Trek project have a daunting task because they have to make new projects relevant for today's audiences while maintaining the core of what Star Trek is in a way that will meet the expectations of most of the most dedicated Star Trek fans.

I say most because some of the most rabid ST fans who are JJ haters will not accept anything less than putting a geriatric TOS cast on the bridge including digging up Lenoard Nimoy's body and propping it up at the science station. Some people will be happy with nothing other than the TOS exactly as it was cast and produced and that is unrealistic.

Having said that it is exciting for Star Trek to be back on episodic tv where it belongs and where there is more time to develop Star Trek themes and interaction between characters.

I am excited and ready for the new series! Come December this year I will be signing up for CBS all access.

I disagree (as a "JJ hater"), it wasn't that the fans didn't want any changes, they just didn't like the changes that Abrams made.

It will be the same with the new series, if you like what they do with it ... then you'll like it.

All previous series (and movies) have been open and exposed to analysis and observation from the fan base, the new series will as well.

As it should be.
