Would You Still Be a Science Fiction Fan?

Here he is. I forgot there is also a talking frog in Tubby the Tuba.

Yeah and for me it was also the Aurora Tarantula, Voyage to the bottom of the sea Minisub, Land of the Giants Spindrift and the ship from the (can't remember the name of the) film about being miniaturised and put in a human body to repair a brain clot. Fantastic Voyage - maybe ??

Yep, Fantastic Voyage.

And I remember building a model of the cyclops from LOST IN SPACE, too.

Oh please. With great shows like "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" <--- As a kid I saw and loved many episodes of those before I ever saw an episode of 'Star Trek'.

Plus, the many good science fiction films like:
"When Worlds Collide"
"War of the Worlds"
"This Island Earth"
"Forbidden Planet"
^^^
Again as a kid those got me interested in science fiction (and space-based science fiction) before I laid my eyes on an episode of Star Trek or Lost in Space. The idea the film and TV science fiction fandom somehow started with 'Star Trek', or that 'Star trek' was the first real adult themed science fiction series on TV is ridiculous.

I rewatched When Worlds Colide recently. It's held up really well, and I am amazed that it's never been remade...though 2012 with John Cusack is really similar in a way.

Whilst one can never say for definite, I would likely say es, but then again being a Brit we did have one Sci-Fi TV show on hat was on when I was gorwing up Doctor Who. Not to mention on the Beebs sister channel we had shows like Star Trek, Buck Rogers etc.. in re-runs.

Yes, George Pal made some great movies. A totally underrated director and producer.

See also The Seven Faces of Doctor Lao, which is another personal favorite. The Time Machine is probably my very favorite Pal movie, though.

We should also mention Jack Arnold: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Tarantula, The Monolith Monsters, It Came from Outer Space, etc. Those movies were also playing constantly on TV around the same time as Star Trek.

I want to claim that I was also watching Barbarella back then, but I was way too young for that. :)

Strange to realize that 2001, Barbarella, Star Trek, and The Green Slime were all contemporaries of each other.

I remember watching Tomorrow's people and Blake's 7 as a child. I had no idea what was going on but still enjoyed it. The same with Star Trek reruns. I liked the Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy as a teen. read the book and watched the BBC series.
(I was a 70's child and an 80's teen)

I have no idea when I became a science fiction fan but I think it's safe to say that I would have become a fan even if TOS had never existed. As a kid in the 70s, I enjoyed Star Trek and Lost in Space in re-run and the Planet of the Apes movies. Later in the 70s, it was Star Wars. I fondly remember the Buck Rogers TV show and the Flash Gordon cartoon as well as movies like Logan's Run and The Omega Man. Around the same time, I started watching Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. I never really got into science fiction literature though. I was more predisposed to to fantasy novels.
