What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"?

Please, please....someone go back in time during the production of the HD-DVD season one box set and tell CBS Digital to get rid of the Jetson's family flying car.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

How about just the title block, followed by 48 minutes of digitally remastered test pattern, followed by the closing credits. I think that is the only way to make that episode watchable.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

Find the Lt. Masters/Lazarus romantic subplot footage lost somewhere in the back of the Desilu vault, and restore the episode. :D

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

Without script changes, the orbital scenes. The shaking galaxy or nebula(I do not recall what it was from memory).

It's the Triffid Nebula.

I'd focus on making the whole duel of the Lazari more epic, like some sort of psychadelic drug-induced hallucination. It kind of looks like that anyway, but a low-rent one.

Otherwise, the episode is fine.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

CGI in a couple more scenes of Lazarus falling off a cliff. I can never get enough of that.

CGI a Gorn in the background.

Put George Jetson in Lazarus' timeship.

When Kirk travels to the alternate universe his hair should be parted on the other side and his uniform insignia should switch sides, just to remind the stupider viewers of what's going on.

Give Masterson a red uniform. Chicks look better in red (Helen Noel excepted).

Take the original film and cut all the scenes apart. Throw them up in the air and splice them back together in a random fashion. That way at least the story would make sense.

Actually, that ship reminds me more of Space Mouse's Lunar Schooner, but I bet not a lot of people remember that comic. :)

See: http://www.povonline.com/iaq/IAQ13.htm

Ah, fond memories of my Space Mouse sheet and pillow case set from when I was little....

More on topic, anything they can do to show in a less convoluted way, the space/time disturbance would sure help... but yeah, this one is almost beyond repair.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

This is one that could well benefit from losing 8 minutes. A good editor could do wonders.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

How about replace the entire episode with William Shatner "preforming" classic rock songs like only he can.

Those scenes were never shot. They are in the first draft and gone by the final just a week or so later. Honestly, they would not have added to the story--they were pretty atrocious, imo. I've transcribed a couple of the passages in my review of the script--first link in my sig, scroll down to you find it (iirc, I've got reviews of both versions of the script there).

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

This stupid story needs so much work I'm not getting my hopes up too high that Okuda and his team did enough to satisfy me. The episode is such a cheesy f/x mess and logical shithole that only reshooting it with a modified, better script and new actors could salvage it. And I don't think Okuda had enough time to change everything that needed it.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

Thanks, Kegek. Forbin, that Lunar Schooner resembles many one man ships of that era.

Either one of these suggestions works for me.

I agree and change the color of Lt. Masters Tunic Mini to Red to reflect her being an engineer :)

That's how we got the story in the first place.

Hah, not bold enough says I!

The CGI team should work on the spiralling galaxy and shots of Kirk and Lazarus between dimensions, extend them a few minutes each, add some more swirliness, make the whole episode over for stoners basically, allow us to enjoy this one :p

I actually enjoy this episode, its what I think is deemed a guilty pleasure. There is little to redeem it for the average viewer, no camp, no interesting scientific premise, no hotties (for men or women beyond the regular crew...) But for some reason I like it, there's, something to it. I don't know what, I couldn't defend it like "Spock's Brain", not in a million years. But I like it. So there

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Alternative Factor"

I enjoy this episode in all innocence. I think it's a good, weird-as-hell premise. I actually like the fact it's difficult even in retrospect to tell which Lazarus is which at times... it just adds to the general weirdness. A cosmic struggle between doppelgangers on which the fate of two realities rests... yep, nice episode.
