Twin Peaks

Now that most of the shows that I watch are over, I've been thinking about checking out some old shows. Has anyone here seen Twin Peaks? Is it worth seeing?

I'm a fan of shows like LOST, Supernatural, and Fringe.

As I've stated many times before here, Twin Peaks is one of my favorite series (in the top five for sure).

It can be hard to predict whether one will enjoy Twin Peaks, as there really is nothing else on television quite like it. I do know a lot of Lost fans enjoy the series and vice versa, so I say give it a shot.

I've exposed several people to the show, and from what I've seen I advise you to watch the pilot and the first two episodes. If you aren't intrigued by the end of that third episode, it likely won't happen for you. The reason I say this is because that is the point at which the series gets truly strange, and may attract or repel you. Also, the style of Twin Peaks can take some getting used to (It took me an hour or two to realise the soap elements were meant to be a partial parody of that genre)

Be sure not to miss the pilot, which is only available in the Gold Box set (watch us version, not the international cut, as it spoils the series). There is a prequel film, very different in tone, that should be watched after the series. .

Please post some reviews if you do watch it, I would love to read them.

The show itself is almost perfect. Funny, Quirky, frightening, mysterious. Excellent serial storytelling and characters. I wish it had gone on longer.

I bought the first series on a whim a few years ago, now to be fair it was quite a while ago and I can't really remember a lot of it now, maybe I should try watch it again sometime and re-evaluate it. But I do remember not really liking it and finding it pretty dull.
I just couldn't get into it, the basic premise sounding interesting, I just didn't like the way it was done. Weird shit for the sake of being weird. To the extreme.
An FBI agents comes to a town to investigate a murder and everyone in the town is fucking nuts. This would be ok if said FBI guy was the straight man, but he's even friggin weirder than they are. Then later some other FBI people show, and they're even weirder than he is!
I just remember it got ridiculous and I got fed up with it. From what I've heard Series 2 was even worse.

But like I said, maybe I'd think different if I watched it again. But I'd have to be very bored to consider doing that.

It's a great show with one of my top ten horrific murder scenes. Don't watch the movie first though - it contains spoilers and had a less quirky feel than the series and I didn't like it too much.

We're coming up for its 25th anniversary in 2015 aren't we? Maybe Lynch will return to it and finish the story - Laura did say she'd see Cooper in 25 years didn't she? Or was it 20 years? Maybe we'd better give Lynch a call...

From the first six episodes I've seen, it is one of the best shows I've watched. It makes you feel immersed in the lives of these characters and the town they live in with its typical weridness. And you're going to love FBI Agent Dale Cooper. He's not like any FBI agent I've seen on television.

I definitely recommend Twin Peaks, but with a couple of important qualifications.

The pilot, first season, and first half of the second season are excellent. It's not to everyone's taste, but if you like this sort of thing, you will definitely like these episodes.

BUT--most of the second half of season 2 sucks. Just flat-out sucks, in comparison to what came before. The show completely loses focus and direction, and you'll understand right away why it was cancelled after just two seasons.

BUT--if you can make it through the second half of the second season, you'll find that the last couple of episodes improve enormously, and the season finale is really good (albeit extremely weird).

If you buy the Gold box set, you will definitely get your money's worth: IMO, the good far outweighs the bad. But be prepared for the second-season nose-dive I described above.

I also recommend the series.

But the reason I revived this recent thread was because of a news story I had just read.

They don't state it in the article, but Black Lodge Video is an obvious homage to Twin Peaks. The winged diamond symbol is even the same one that was on the "Ring of Bob". And the swaths of red? Meant to be blood. The guys who own the place are obviously big fans.

Couldn't agree more. Plus some EXTREMELY good looking boys and girls. What student didn't have Sherilyn Fenn, Machen Amick and Lara Fynn Boyle posters on their wall during the 90s?:)

By the way, love your avatar. One of the things I loved about The Six Million Dollar Man was that Lee Majors always struck you that he really could have been an astronaut, he had that sort of physicality about him

I live just a couple of miles from Black Lodge video, and it is an awesome place to rent or just hang out.

They are Freakish Peaks fans, yes. You can hardly see in the pic, but that's Cooper in the drapes (I've always wonder if they had to get permission to use Kyle Mac's image.) In addition, the inside has more red drapes , and quotations from Twin Peaks are painted on the walls. Many directors have their own section, but Lynch's is the first thing you see upon walking in.
Really great place.

So Dream, did you decide to watch or not?

This.

Also, watch the movie, but only AFTER you have seen the show. Otherwise you'll just spoil it.

Who? You mean these three?

Thanks Saturn, Lee Majors replaced my old Cooper avatar, and I like it as well.

Sherilyn Fenn is beautiful, has a real classic look.

The coolest supporting player was Albert I think. Everything he says cracks me up.

I've been watching Charmed (a guilty pleasure) on dvd recently and the shift in tone to something like Twin Peaks gave me whiplash.

I have watched the first two episodes.

My first impressions of the show. It's pretty good. The pilot was really creepy, mainly because of the music and the crying scenes. The show doesn't feel dated like most shows from this era. Agent Cooper felt like a more eccentric verison of Mulder from the X-Files. Sheriff Harry seems like the only normal guy in town. Audrey and Donna are indeed hot.

I had a feeling James wasn't the killer! No way they would catch the killer in the first episode!

That Leo is a jerk and might be the killer. But this has be misdirection by the writers...

The murder plot is interesting. I can't believe something like this was aired in the 90s. It's very dark.

I remembering hearing a long time ago from somewhere that murder plot is concluded sometime in season two. Are the episodes after that worth watching?

Glad you enjoyed the first two. The next episode will introduce some very strange (understatement) developments.

Yeah, I'm huge fan but I wouldn't suggest the episodes after the murder plot unless you are really into it at that point. That said, it may be worth it as the last few episodes and the film pick up a lot of the slack. Even the bad episodes have some choice moments sprinkled in.
Give it a try and see.

The murder plot ends perfectly, and feels like the true series finale. Those last few of the murder thread are some of the best Television episodes around.

I wish I could see Peaks for the first time again.

Absolutely, yes. A few outright suck but the last four are great and the finale is, well, amazing. I honestly can't believe it was aired on television. It's mindblowing. If you want, just skip ones you don't like after the murder is solved (the one after the murder is solved is quite good but the next five or so are blah).

If anyone cares, on the next episode of Psych (Wednesday, Dec. 1), Dana Ashbrook, Sheryl Lee, Sherilyn Fenn, Robyn Lively, Lenny von Dohlen and Ray Wise are guest starring. Probably just a coincidence, I'm sure. Just like the dead girl they find wrapped in plastic washed ashore. ;)

I don't normally watch Psych (I used to but during the second season I got tired of the formula and dropped it) but I will definitely watch that one. Twin Peaks...awesome.
