TREKS' best music

The pastoral main theme to Star Trek: First Concact is probably my single favorite piece of Trek music. It just contrasts so beautifully with the dark and ominous tone of the film - a real masterpiece.

I just that I have the soundtrack CDs for the The Emissary (DS9) and Caretaker, they IMO they are actually both pretty good. Not quite up to the movies' level, but still pretty good for a TV show. Although my all time favorite TV music is Lost's. If I ever see a soundtrack CD for Lost I am grabbing it immediately.

ENT was quite orchestral, and used music as both underscore and punctuation for scenes more than, say, DS9 (which is what I'm watching now). The score for Silent Enemy is spooky (the chase through the dark ship scene has these "tapping footsteps" that are quite chilling), the Mirror Universe theme is wonderfully martial, and the heartbreaking score for Similitude won an Emmy.

One of the way TOS feels dated to me is the obviousness of the music: here are flutes - feel silly! here are violins - feel romantic!

ENT had music during the episodes??? The opening and end credit music was 100% crap for me. But all I remember during the episodes were simple one note background sounds.

I love TOS music. I have a 3 cd set of music from about 6 episodes and just by hearing the music you can follow along with the plot of the episodes. Very effective despite the fact that it is slighly dated.

But some of my faves:
Spock's theme from Amok Time
Gangster music from Mudd's Women and A Piece of the Action
The Immunity Syndrome when the giant amoeba finally appears out of the blackness.

Vina's theme ("The Menagerie")
Kirk/Spock fight ("Amok Time")
planet-killer march {"The Doomsday Machine")
Klingon theme (ST:TMP)

Unfortunately I don't have my DVDs (I loaned them to someone), so I can't suggest any episode other than the 3 I've mentioned. They stick out in my mind. But I would say they're worth a second listen, if you have the chance.

TNG's Tin Man has a great score. I also really like the score for A Fistful of Datas. For the movies, I like a lot of the end credits music like First Contact, Nemesis, TVH and TWOK.

My all time favorite piece of Trek music is The Inner Light orchestral suite that's on the 30th anniversary Star Trek album.

Funny enough despite my hating the show, the soundtrack for Broken Bow is the only peice or merchandise I own with the Enterprise Logo on it. McCarthy's work on it reminded me a lot of his Generations score.

I get lost in the music and can't identify it from individual episodes well. The original Trek's music is leaps and bounds ahead of any of the rest, though. Even when reused, it has so much feeling in it that it never sounds like conveyer-belt background music.

Next Gen did better when it had that icy synthesizer music through season three. They were capable of generating a real sense of alarm then. Later, all they could manage was a slight, surreal, dissonant swelling of strings, which always sounded the same, and was overused to the point where it became meaningless. Picard could experience a replicator glitch and not get his Earl Gray, and that generic "surreal" music would kick in. It was an easy crutch to lean on.

Someone on this board pointed out once that union demands led to Berman Trek using all new music for every episode, rather than reusing any. This inevitably led to a drop in quality. A whole new score every week... how could very much of it be inspired?

I love the music in the final moments in "Q Who". The mood is very complicated, in the music and in the story at that moment... relief that they're safe, awe, combined with fear.

I've always loved the music from the "Stealing the Enterprise" sequence from STIII, which is probably my favorite sequence from the movie.

Good choice! The contrast between the clattering Excelsior theme and the plaintive little notes for the Enterprise is most affecting.

The most appealing work are Alexander Courage's main theme, and the Gerald Fried music for Vulcan agression. And, later on, nearly everything by Goldsmith.

I like the 'busy man' suite as well. I actually think TFF has a pretty good soundtrack, when comparing it to some of the lamer TNG movie soundtracks. And in terms of a TOS movie, I think the music of TFF holds up quite well.

Had Goldsmith done another western Soundtrack he could have lifted that entire sequence of Kirk climbing and had great background music!!!

My all-time favorite is what I call the "Yosemite Suite" by Jerry Goldsmith in STV:TFF. One of the few things I liked about that film.

I wish he would have expanded it before his death. It was just a beautiful, beautiful piece of music.

i love everything Goldsmith has done for Star Trek. Horner was pretty good also, but something I was surprised to know that Brian Tyler composed some of Enterprise's episodes. I recently watched "regeneration" couple days ago, and the soundtrack was awesome. It was good to hear some new sounds in the show. I'm getting tired of the usual boring McCarthy-Chattaway soundtrack...

One major plaus for TOS's often derided Season Three was the musical scores. "Is There in Truth No Beauty" and "The Empath" were two master works and "The Paradise Syndrome" was good too. Also, the suspenseful theme introduced in "Spock's Brain" which was used throughout the season to lead into commercial breaks is a personal fave. It slightly echoes the series' main theme as well.

Always liked the scores for TMP, FC and TUC (I'm listening to the TUC-Ouverture right now ;)) - as for other pieces: Most of TOS is just classic, so are "The Mountain" from Goldsmith's TFF-score, "Battle in the Mutara Nebula" from Horner's TWOK-score and some others.
I used to have an interesting version of the DS9-theme. It was called "Single Version", was 4 minutes long and attempted to have something like a guitar-solo if I remember correctly. Liked that, too.

Here are mine:

The score for TWOK (watching the film with no sound will give you an idea why this score matterd)
TUC (the mood is set)

The last four minutes or so of "The Changing Face of Evil"

The theme for 'the Visitor"

"The Inner Light" flute

"We have engaged the Borg" from BOBW part one

"The Seige of AR 558"

The music for Ent's "Anamoly, prticularly act one, when the Osarians raid the ship. Loooove the percussion.

"The forgotten'

The end of "Call to Arms'

The "First Contact" theme from the film

"Generations" and "WOTW - when the Defiant rescues Dukat" (sounds very similar to me

I love the long strain of music...one note... in WYLB. It occurs in a scene on the Defiant.. I don't remember when it starts but it is going on when Odo gets reports of all the Cardassians being killed.

I loved the scores of both TUC and FC the best. And also TMP of course. :) Everytime I hear the music from TMP it puts a smile on my face. My favorite score was the score(can't remember the name of the music) where Kirk sees the Enterprise for the first time again. I almost cry everytime I watch that scene because of the music. Amazing! And also I loved FC's score..beautiful. :)
