They don't get used that often in most modern drama, well with the exception of LOST that is

The clichéd "flashback" is a very tired old plot device. But Abrams' style is to use a "backstory", which in my opinion differs from a traditional flashback. In a flashback, someone is reminiscing about a past event. In a 'Lost'-style backstory, nobody is reminiscing or thinking back -- the backstory events are provided to only us, the audience, and is included by the writers to give us some insight into what is happening in the "here and now".
For example, this film could start Post-Nemesis and feature old Spock on some mission of great importance. Then (in 'Lost' fashion) we -- the audience -- are temporarily allowed to glimpse something that happened to younger Spock and younger Kirk that bears greatly on the mission of old Spock. There is no "thinking back" by old Spock...we are not watching Old Spock thinking about the past. The backstory is shown strictly for the benefit of the audience. Like on 'Lost', I can see the story shifting back and forth several times in an effort to tell the story in a dramatic fashion.
That's My 2¢ anyway, for what its worth.
