Trek XI is a Time travel movie???

Im not saying it would be a good Idea. Just saying it looks like its adding up to be it. That or the other idea of Flashbacks. I really hate thoses

Flashbacks are far less contrived then time travel, plus they carry a kind of literary weight which at least makes them appeal to me.

Flashbacks are a very old dramatic plot device.
They don't get used that often in most modern drama, well with the exception of LOST that is ;)

I'm pretty sure the whole movie will be a flashback, bookended by a very aging Spock, either near or at the end of his life (in the 24th or perhaps even the 25th century), remembering the time when he first met Jim Kirk. Maybe Spock is missing his old friend; we've never had a chance in the films to see Spock react to Kirk's death. Because of the flashback structure, this film could carry a very heavy emotional weight. I like it.

Abrams used the flashback structure to great effect in MI:3, IMO. And as others have said, it's a very common tool that he uses in Lost.

I'm quite sure that's what we'll see, rather than time travel.

What if Abrams fools everyone (except me, ya see) by making the story all about how the aged Spock--played by Nimoy--manages to RECOVER his lost youth by discovering the ACTUAL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH, which he drinks from and then comes out played by the new guy? Could be, in fact, that Spock is actually MUCH older than we ever knew and he is restored to his youth and THEN joins Star Fleet and meets Kirk! In fact, it could be revealed that Sarak as not his FATHER at all but rather, his son.

It would turn all of Star Trek on its head and be the LAST thing that anyone expected (except for me, ya see . . . Well, and now you too).

Well, if they did that... I really WOULD be saying "The pain, the pain..." ;)

I just do not like the idea of Trek XI. It is just me, but I think it is time to move into the post DS9 era. I do not care what they use, Generation, Voyager or DS9.

Ugh. No time-travel, it's an overused gimmick. Flashbacks work just fine.

I'm on your side of the fence. Time-travel (the proverbial reset button) is such an overused plot device. I'll take a well written flashback any day.

I'm OK with flashbacks that help explain or move the story in the story's current time (like the flashback scene in "Casablanca"). If it's just Spock reminiscing on his deathbed or whatever -- eh. That borders on gratuitous to me. Or overly sentimental, anyway. Can't even think Nimoy would want to do that. He's already had his death scene. So, I'm holding out hope that the story connects the two time periods in some way. And, that can be done without anyone travelling through time.
But, if I had to vote for either "flasback" or "time travel" with no alternative, I'd have to go with time travel.

Somebody on here very recently suggested that in Old Spock's era, there could be some evidence uncovered that puts Kirk and Spock's first adventure in a negative light, so Spock gives his testimony to the events. It's not the most energetic role for Old Spock, but it is still better than a random flashback, and kinda ties him specifically into the previous events.

I'm guesing it will be in flash back form with Spock telling his story. I also think it won't just be bookended, I think like Lost old Spock will appear throughout the movie.

Could be a holographic old Spock or an alternate universe Spock.

Or a Spock-in-the-Box or a Spock with amazing Kung-fu grip . . .

(How about a Spock that walks down stairs, alone or in pairs and makes a Spockety sound?)

Or it could be neither...

Old Spock causes a spacial anomaly that expands as it reaches back in time threatening the destruction of humanity. Young Spock and Old Spock (from their respective time eras) must work to avert the disaster.
All Good Things ...

How about a holographic alternate universe Spock who's from their future... but his own past?

I like the way you think, aragorn, but we're talking Orci and Kurtzman here. More like a thin warmed over second rate Star Wars plot.
