In "Return To Tomorrow" Chapel not only saves the day when she spots a murder attempt, takes down the villain but also hosts Spock's mind. And the glowing spheres containing the disembodied minds are rather fun.

I have always appreciated "The Slaver Weapon" for benching Kirk & McCoy for a week and letting Uhura and Sulu (and, yes, Spock) take the lead.

Two stories come to mind, one for creative ideas and the other that focuses on Majel taking center stage. In that regard, I'm going what's closest to the OP's intent and voting for Majel and not the plot:

TNG, Season 4: "Half A Life" (Lwaxana)

Majel just steals the show in this. Her comedic acting has always been tingent and sharp in TNG and is a joy to watch, but here she gets to do so much more and not be comedic, where comedy is the most subjective form of entertainment, but I digress: She captivates with her performance and sincerity and readily proves she has leading ability. Great subject matter to work with as well.

It's her best episode of TNG.

When I was making my last save, I was deciding between that, "The Tholian Web", and "The Menagerie", and most of those have now been taken. So I'll finish up "The Menagerie" and save Part II. This really was an ingenious way to repurpose "The Cage", and the beep chair has become absolutely iconic.

Admittedly not the very best of TOS, but I've always had a soft spot for "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" because of the rare McCoy romance -- love my blue-eyed boy! And the glimpse of the McCoy-Chapel friendship was nice; she wanted him to have the support he needed from Kirk and Spock even if his pride wouldn't let him ask for it.

Saving "OBSESSION".

It was a good Kirk character piece. We get to see him very vulnerable with his guilt from the Farragut and his need to destroy that creature.

And it gave us Ensign Garrovick... while he was fine here, his character was used for the superb PRODIGY episode "ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE".

One probem with Barrett's roles outside of Lwaxana Troi is that they are mostly background figures so it's difficult to find examples where she has much chance to shine.

In "Mudd's Passion" Barrett plays three characters and Chapel is a major player in the tangled web that Harry Mudd weaves. It's an enjoyable episode all round.

Of what's left, there are still quite a few that impress in one way or another, even if Majel is barely in my next vote. Majel has always been a part of Trek since day one, and while I adore her as Lwaxana, her other presences in TNG revolve around less unconventional/original material. Which isn't to say it's bad, as I can cite reasons for all of them up to a point, but there's one story that just stands out for me because of everything wrapped into it and, as being in the medical field, her involvement is still important to the story:


TOS, Season 2: "The Immunity Syndrome" (Chapel)

gets my vote this time. Because the story's ideas, despite some logistical mistakes (e.g. how fast this amoeba thing travels, etc) has ideas so imaginative, well-acted, terrific dialogue, great plot reveals/pacing, great banter and jibes, shows how space is a dangerous place and that's why they're out there, and great special effects to where even the modern CGI can't outdo the originals (and I've generally been a fan of TOS-R), that it is more than the sum of its parts and remains engaging. I can't gush enough about this story as it's as Trek as TOS could get, even if it used "The Doomsday Machine" as a partial template.

All of that is saying something as her other Lwaxana appearances are generally solid, with one standout, but even against that episode, this TOS entry still reminds me that it is the one that had the greatest number of true unknowns out there and that's one of the biggest core values of Trek right there. Again, for these choices, it's both a balance and to try to weigh all the variables.

I'm going to save "The Deadly Years" from TOS. It's one of my personal favorites from TOS and Chapel does a nice job in that episode. (The only thing I've never been able to figure out is why Commodore Stocker keeps calling Captain Kirk "sir.")

Another McCoy-centric episode, another save by Brennyren. Saving TAS "The Albatross," an unusual mystery that put the good doctor on the spot, and showed him to be a person of acute conscience (with a good, and concerned, friend in Chapel).

I do love "Haven." As objectively bad as it often is, all season 1 TNG is irresistible to me. The vibe of it is just such a warm, nostalgic blanket.

Saving "Manhunt".

I know many don't seem to like this one, and I can undersrand why to some degree... but there were a lot of fun scenes.

1. Riker's expression after he learns the Phase can MORE than quadruple the Betazoid sex drive and when she said she didn't want to frighten him.

2. Data sharing stories at the dinner, and Picard's relief at the end and saying how Data will never know how much he owes him for that.

3. Pulaski's conversation with Troi on how this will be a good test of his 'reflexes and agility'.

4. Picard making adjustments on the Dixon Hill program. The final one with the guy with machine gun and Picard throwing himself afainst the wall never ceases to make me laugh.


And we even got Mick Fleetwood to appear as one of the delegates, which had a really great look.

I like the character of M'Ress and in TAS (and I was pleased by James Swallow writing TOS novels in the TAS era). "The Practical Joker" is a nostalgia save. The jokes are rather childish but then so was I when I first watched them. This episode is important for Star Trek in general as we saw the first iteration of what became holodecks and holosuites.

And of course, Scotty needs to out-drink his opponent.
