THE INVADERS - "a Quinn Martin Production" Any other fans?

Captain Tracy

Commander
Red Shirt
I watched episode #1 'Beachhead', and enjoyed the paranoid, a la' Twilight Zone, aspect of it. Pretty good for not being Star Trek I thought.

I see it only ran two seasons, but I am going to start watching them to see how it develops and if it holds up to the first epi.

Any other of fans of this classic out there?

I enjoyed it back in 69/70 on British TV but I found it did get a tad repetitive. For a cancelled show that was much more serialised than usual for the day, I believe it didn't have a cliffhanger ending. The series is available on DVD, so I might rent the discs and see how it holds up now.

The Invaders is quite good IMO. if you get tired of the format it does change a bit in season two. has some fun guest stars like Michael Rennie, Roddy McDowell, and Diana Muldaur.

Have the disks, watching an ep every now and then and enjoying the nostalgia.
Recently watched on with Dawn Wells in full bloom. Sigh :).

SHINZON - Last night, I watched episode #2 - 'The Experiment' - and it too was a very good story about an eldery Scientist who has documented proof of the existence of The Invaders.

The Scientist is trying to get to Washington, DC to delivery a speech (along with the proof) which will expose The Invaders, prove their existence, and reveal their intent.

Interestingly, this is the episode in which Roddy McDowell guest stars as the nephew of the Scientist. Also, Harold Gould, who played 'Kid Twist' in the movie, The Sting, turns in a great performance.

So far we are 2 for 2,... I am very interested to see where the writers go with the stories, and if they can sustain the interest in the premise.

Moving on to the next story,..."Tonight's Episode,... 'The Mutation'... dum, dum, dum, dee"

I have fond, if fuzzy, memories of this from it's initial run. I'll be interested to hear more about your viewings, Capt. Tracy.

Suzanne Pleshette was in an early episode. Reminded me that she was insanely hot in her yoot.

FORBIN - Wow,... the episode I watched last night, 'The Mutantion', guest-starred Suzanne Pleshette!

Our hero, David Vincent, travels to investigate the rumor of a crashed space ship way out in the desert.

There is a lot of important information given as to the nature of The Invaders as a species, and a lot of special effects and opticals (provided by the same company who did Star Treks opticals).

In this episode there are some marked differences from the first two episodes:

1) The David Vincent character is played slightly more aggressive, driven, and forceful,... seems more like a private detective with a grudge,... whereas in the first two episodes, he is played more paranoid, confused, and panicked.

I do not know if this is part of the natural character development, as he accepts his new role in life; or was it simply how he actor was asked by deliver by the wishes of the director.

I like the character played both ways, but he is more a sympathetic, character in the first two episodes, and in this episode he seems very secure, confident, and somewhat indignant, acting more HEROIC - being a big switch from the 'panicked VICTIM'.

So I am merely noting the switch, not stating 'good or bad'.

2) While there was plenty of action in the first two episodes, but they were more 'in the head', especially playing up his character being viewed by others as a paranoid guy who cannot get people to believe him,... I personally feel this is very powerful,... This third episode is mostly ACTION,.. lots of running about, ray guns firing off, being chased, that sort of thing - The FUN stuff,... especially when we see him kill his first Invader,... VERY COOL MOMENT!!!

In fact, I think the whole scene when he is picking off Aliens is the best visual scene in the series thus far.

Is a good episode? Well,... it is not as satisfying as the first two, as there is not really any creepy Twilight Zone flavor in this one,... as I said, he acts more like an Investigative Reporter in this one, than a guy who is totally freaked-out and trying to warn a World who will not listen, while being pursued by the The Invaders.

Where it is good: We learn a lot about the villains; what their ship looks like up close, their weapons, and more background on The Invaders as a culture.

Perhaps this was one of those scripts the producers felt they needed to do in order to fill in a lot of exposition quickly for the viewers.

Would I watch this episode again?

Sure, but not for the STORY(which this script was thin on) but to get a better look at the ship, the weapons, and the exposition on the Invaders themselves.

In short, not the best STORY, but a very important and visually exciting EPISODE.

I guess it depends which STYLE of presentation one ultimately prefers.

Let's wee where the writers go with it, shall we?,....

Okay,... tonight's episode,... 'The Leeches',... dum, dum, dum, dah,...

And thanks Captain DEGO,... stay tuned!

Stunning - absolutely! In 'The 'Mutation' episode, she plays a stripper, and acts very 'hard',... it is very compelling to see her, for a short time at least, come out of her "Mrs. Newhart" sweetness,.. and be the classic 'Bad Girl' in the beginning of the episode.

I loved this. My favourite episode is the one with Richard Anderson. Is that Beachead? I can't remember. I used to watch this as a kid on Saturday afternoons. Great show. I have it on dvd (season one) but have yet to watch it. I don't think I've ever seen season 2, though.

Still going well, and enjoying.

Last night I watched 'The Leeches'. The story is about a significantly important electronics engineer who-having learned many other important scientific minds have disappeared-is convinced he is next on The Invaders 'hit list'.

He enlists the help our our hero, David Vincent, and together they cook up a plan to foil the Aliens

More good exposition on how The Invaders operate and what they do to humans.

A solid 'chase and rescue' plot-driven episode, barring the 'B-story' about the engineers marital problems.

Next Episode,... 'Genesis',...

I suppose The Invaders was somewhat serialized, but mainly it was Martin's application of his "runner" format to science fiction. The format was a means of blending the advantages of having a starring character and the possibility of some recurring cast with the advantages of an anthology series.

There's a bit of a format shift in season two, though IIRC it was carried forward somewhat haphazardly from the episode in which it was introduced.

The aliens had a bitchin' flying saucer - it's not quite the C57-D, but it's cool. I had a model kit of the thing. :)

Okay, last night I watched the 'GENESIS',... which was good, but what was interesting was both the prologue and the major climax were straight out of H.P. Lovecraft.

So much so, that while viewing the opening sequence, I really felt I was watching a made-for-TV adaptation of a typical Lovecraft story.

What was interesting to note was the heavy "Detective" angle to the show mixed with the Sci-Fi and Horror.

I guess the producers have firmly settled (at least it seems that way so far) on playing DAVID VINCENT more as a private-eye than a paranoid victim,.. which is okay,.. though I liked him more the other way.

Tonight's episode,... 'Vikor',.. with guest-star JACK 'book 'em Danno' LORD,... dum, dum, dum, dee

Last night's viewing of 'Vikor', was most enjoyable!

This episode had a 'good, honest motivation behind it',.. and is a very well crafted episode! The teaser is PERFECT! This serves as another episode which gives us even more exposition on how The Invaders operate, their plans, and the effect of their interactions with various human personality types.

While, believable, the script was just a wee-bit heavy on the grudge which Vikor - JACK LORD's-character uses as his motivation,... just a page too long, and then reprised later in the episode,... however, I am quite sure that the ONLY reason the writers do this 'over-stating', to ensure that those viewers who are not paying complete attention, or thinking, need to be reminded of the WHY things are playing out as they do.

All-in-all, a great episode!

If I was introducing the series to a friend, I would cite BEACHHEAD and VIKOR as samples for consideration.

Moving on. Tonight's episode,... 'Nightmare',... dum, dum, dum, dee

Own both seasons on DVD..you're in for a treat, Michael Rennie is in at leat one episode..
Barry Morse is in another..

many other guest stars are right out of Star Trek...
