I don't think we have any idea what she meant. It might be that he marked Kenya as his and she's playing in that playground. Or it could be all bullshit that Stahma has come up with to make Kenya feel closer to her because of a shared and dangerous secret. The more in league with Stahma Kenya feels the more likely she is to open up.
^Again, I hope you're right that Stahma had some secret agenda, but normally we would've gotten a shot of her smiling deviously to herself to tip us off, and I don't recall that happening here. Jaime Murray seemed to be playing it straight.
But at this point, I'm almost past caring. This show has disappointed me more than it's pleased me -- there have only been two episodes so far that I thought were genuinely good. I find myself regretting that this show apparently scuttled the chances for the H.G. Wells-centered Warehouse 13 spinoff that Murray was going to star in. I'd much rather be watching Warehouse 12 (or whatever it would've been called) than Defiance.

That was another okayish episode. I think the best part was when the miner and Nicolette had their confrontation, pretty intense when he grabbed her by the neck and then she revealed that she was playing him. More Doc please. I'm glad we got to see a spaceship as well.
Actually I think we DID get a shot of her that led me to think she wasn't playing it straight. After Kenya's apology for laughing at her about her boy there's a moment where all her "oh dear, I am so hurt" look just drops off and she's utterly deadpan.
Still has space ships.
But yes there's some really awful things there, just hoping some plot kicks in and shoves them to the background.
This was only the 7nth episode!
Out of a 12-episode first season -- and with the first episode being double-length, we're actually 8/13 or nearly 62% of the way through. And the last episode I actually liked was #4.
Plus it increasingly seems that the awful things (at least for me) are the core plot threads of the season: Irisa becoming a Mystical Chosen One, Quentin having a Harvey in his head telling him to kill people, the mysterious thing in the mines that hints of ancient astronauts... I'm seeing far more cliche here than orginality.
It's still better than Falling Skies, which isn't difficult.

There's definitely room for improvement, but I find I'm enjoying it more than most shows on these days.

Pretty much. Defiance has the unenviable position of probably being the best sci-fi show currently going, and that's only because there's no serious competition.

The elderly, former Mayor of Defiance woman is this series's Kai Winn. At least that's the opinion I have after watching the last few episodes.
Warehouse 13 is considerably better than Defiance. So is Doctor Who, even though I'm not crazy about the direction it's gone under Moffat. Continuum, whose second season debuts on Syfy this Friday, is imperfect but more consistent in quality than Defiance. I'm not sure if Arrow really counts as sci-fi, but it's quite good.
We've also got the imports Sinbad and Primeval: New World debuting on Syfy this Saturday, though I'm not sure how much to expect from those since they've both already been cancelled after one season in their countries of origin (the UK and Canada, respectively).
It's two episodes into its UK run, and it's not. It continues to struggle with what exactly it's trying to do with Liber8 and the political idea while interesting in theory feels undercooked. Defiance is not much better than Continuum, but it's got a better ensemble and more pieces that fit in a quasi-meaningful manner.
Like most Sky original shows, it's pretty terrible. And it's really more fantasy. Obviously if we're including fantasy we can just say Game of Thrones and go home.
I hear Orphan Black is supposed to be fairly good, but BBC3 hasn't confirmed when exactly they're airing it. So right now, Defiance is basically marginally at the top of the heap. Sure, there's a couple of projects that might challenge this - Bryan Fuller's Syfy show, the Swedish series Real Humans, hell, maybe those remakes of Blake's 7 and Space: 1999 might amount to something - but right now this is it.
I enjoyed the episode overall, but it definitely wasn't one of their better episodes. I found most of the storylines pretty interesting. I was shocked we actually got a non ooga booga explanation for the Sukar's revival, and so now I have to wonder if will end up getting one for Irisa's visions before the season is over.

Warehouse 13, plateaued quickly. It's damn good, but it's not going to get better or worse because it's (mostly) stuck with it's bug hunt cookie cutting plotting, Although, the show has one season left. It's been precancelled for next year.
I took a step away from Sinbad after one awful episode.

Continuum is outstanding. Season one was iffy, but there's only been one truly shitty episode this year and we're past the half way mark.
Orphan Black might qualify as Science fiction?
Although if you're going to bring foreign filth into this "The Almighty Johnsons" which I suppose is more fantasy than science fiction, but in jail we all share the same bucket, makes me tingle all over... Which is going to be remade into something yanktastic soon, since the season one scripts have been sold for a massive pile of green.
After episodes 2 and 4, I might've agreed with you about Defiance's relative quality. But I've been increasingly disappointed by the past three, and right now I have a very negative opinion of the show. Maybe more negative than it deserves, but I'm bitter because my hopes were so high.
Although I'd still put Warehouse 13 at the top of the heap, except it falls more under fantasy than SF. But there's also CBS's Person of Interest, a solid show that's become more overtly SF over the course of the past season.
As for Orphan Black, I've heard good things about its quality, but also heard that it's a darker show than I like to watch -- which is also what keeps me from sampling Game of Thrones.
This is true. This is the weakest episode the show's had and it's really not able to write the whole religion/science debate that well (this is something Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica both handled more coherently), and that the show seems to feel Lost-style conspiracy stories are a more valuable arc than stories about the relationships between aliens feels like a mistake. Defiance has a great premise and a good idea for an ensemble but it's not handling this all that well.
And Guy, as far as 'fantasy' goes, the French series The Returned is getting rave reviews and premiering on UK TV on Channel 4 this Saturday.
