The Defiance Thread - News about the Show and Game

Defiance really is pretty bad so far. But it has elements I personally love so I'm waiting for the choppy plot to fix itself.

Post apocalyptic setting, a huge plus for me.

Aliens. Lots of aliens.

Disheveled town made of old freight cars :techman:

Brothel is interesting, Kenya has some spark to her.

All that shit up in the sky falling down is nice to look at but the potential for ark-fall weird stuff of the week is high.

I would like to get rid of the mayor, do something to make the lawman interesting and dress people worse. I don't like that the mayor and varying other women look like they just came from the mall. This is bullshit. If you're going to build a post apocalyptic world everyone needs to look like that's the world they are living in and not be people who would seamlessly blend in popping down the shops of our world.

I would like the magic artifact dropped or resolved as tech. I don't want any magic, only tech!!

Also could do with getting more soap opera, make it sexy.

...and that the show seems to feel Lost-style conspiracy stories are a more valuable arc than stories about the relationships between aliens feels like a mistake. Defiance has a great premise and a good idea for an ensemble but it's not handling this all that well.

That's a good point. Too many shows these days are so fixated on having big story arcs and mysteries that it can distract from the story potential inherent in their basic premises.

I'm not crazy about post-apocalyptic settings, but I like exotic, alien settings. I feel, though, that they haven't done enough to show that. The previews and teasers promised a radically transformed Earth biosphere, but instead we've just gotten an environment that looks like the woods outside Toronto with the occasional alien critter passing through.

Aliens. Lots of aliens.

Who have turned out to be not as imaginative as I'd hoped, either in makeup design or in culture. And we're not really seeing much interaction among them, or learning much about any of them except the Castithans and Irathients.

Brothel is interesting, Kenya has some spark to her.

This is the part that's seemed most original to me, at least until this episode botched Kenya by portraying her as so amateurish that she'd laugh in a customer's face because she was unfamiliar with Castithan sexual mores. True, Firefly also gave us a character who was a sex worker in a culture where such things were legal and respected, but we didn't see as much of her doing her job and that job wasn't as accepted by her love interest.

That seems to be more a focus of the game than the show so far. And I particularly disliked the "razor rain" concept from a logic/physics standpoint. For one thing, when the shuttle Columbia exploded just 40 miles up, its debris footprint spread across three states; the debris of a craft falling from orbit would probably be spread across the continent and an ocean or two, and probably no more than one piece -- at most -- would land in an area the size of Defiance. Two, metal fragments falling through the air, even if they didn't burn up in orbit, wouldn't come in edge-first at high speed, but would more likely waft and spin like falling leaves and quickly slow to terminal velocity. Satellite and rocket debris is constantly falling out of orbit in real life, but nobody's ever been hurt by it.

It took seven seasons and three movies for Dee and her monkey to get it on, but Defiance doesn't have enough sex in it for you after 7 weeks?

YOU!

The one who image captures stills of all the freakish sex on camera so far.

THEY USE BAKED BEANS FOR LUBE!

(Sigh.)

I want more about the Doctor.

What sort of war criminal is she, and will she frakk humans?

I am SO sick of big government conspiracy stories. I completely agree with you Kegg, I would love to see this more about the relationships between the alien species, all struggling to survive.

I mean soap opera like Six Feet Under only with Aliens. Relationship drama(s) only with Aliens. But yeah more sex would not hurt it, especially if it isn't just random gratuitous stuff like some of GoT but connected to all the politics. That's why I think the Kenya/Stahma bed has potential.

When Kai Winn and Dukat were in bed together it was super interesting but if we just saw either of them in bed with some random hookup it would only be window dressing. Yes I know someone will now post a vomit emoticon about Kai Winn in bed with anyone even though Dukat the sociopath gets a pass.

I just want some grown up alien sex and politics. I don't think this is too much to ask for.

From a show made for children?

Yes it is.

What did you think of Scandal?

(Season 2 just finished in the states.)

A lot trashy but marvellous degrees of politics, murder and sex between the wrong people all the time.

Of course I have not watched that, I can barely keep up with all the space ship shows that everyone laments there aren't enough of.

And okay, I want a show not made for children. But I really don't think that scene with the john having his stomach explode during sex was family time viewing.

We have different definitions of children.

When I was 3, my favourite shows were the Star Trek, CHiPs, Starskey and Hutch, and Magnum PI.

They don't make children like that anymore.

####ing blues ####ing clues.

There are a few phases of childhood.

Defiance is probably made for people with the mental capacities of a 12 - 18 years old, but not necessarily literally 12 to 18 year olds.

Even though to make money they have to get a couple dozen 35 year olds to buy cars every month.

Any sad bugger who buys a 30 thousand dollar "roller" because they saw an ad during a screening of Defiance DOES have the mental faculties of a 12 year old.

No I actually meant children.

"Very young people"

It's that the older we get, the broader the definition of "very young people" becomes.

But I assumed the Gamers would think I was talking about them, either because of what happened earlier in the thread or the "why are they always picking on me" thread in the gaming section, which if I was a vain man, I would believe that I was the direct influence for the creation there of.

An adult will watch a show set in the future.

A child will marvel at the toys from the future.

I guess what I'm saying is that adults, true adults, cannot be happy.

I noticed an interesting trend in recent tv shows.

So, I propose an extesion to Bechdel test:

If two women talk to each other about their dreams/aspirations and not about a man, how often this conversation will end up in a bed..?

The equality we really want is when two guys slumped on a couch with beers in their hands talk about their failed aspirations and then BOOM they are in bed.

The only vaguely similar scene that I can remember is in Six Degrees of Separation with Will Smith...

I don't mind the conspiracy stories but it seems that a lot of people want to emulate the mystery part of Lost and not the character part. Most of the characters in Defiance aren't that interesting. I'm going to give it until the end of the season.

I'd have to disagree with some though, I prefer Falling Skies to this.

And teacake if they got rid of Julie Benz I would definitely stop watching :p

Oh I care deeply for them, yes. I am looking forward to the day they drug Christie or whatever her name is and force her into the bathtub with them all. TO BATHE. And of course eventually she will kill one of them and that will be very satisfying. I am absolutely convinced of this.
