Re: Shatner

It's altogether possible TPTB would rather have continued speculation about Shatner's role for the time being, and then bring him out as the 'surprise' at next year's SDCC.

That'd be kind of late, wouldn't it? After all, filming starts in November and casting would probably have been announced by then, if not leaked through spy reports around the set.

Like everyone else, this is disappointing.

However, the best news is that they're trying to find a way to put Shatner in the film.

As Kirk said, "I'd like to think there are always...possibilities."

I have to admit, mentioning that he was a Star Wars kid not Star Trek was a mis-step in my opinion.

I mean, couldnt he have just lied to us?

Well if this information hadn't been leaked then it was huge news! So I am just happy it has been confirmed.

That would seem like an odd thing to bring up - though I kind of "get" it as well - myself I've fluctuated between the two. Since I have been getting vibes of respect so far from all he'd done its no problem with me. Or maybe he's tossing it out for GL's sake so he can direct or write an episode of the much talked about Star Wars tv series as well?

I think Abrams just said that as a point of reference to get people to understand he's a geek like the rest of us and to let us know what flavor of geek he is.

No big deal.

Now, if he'd said "I always thought Star Wars was superior to Star Trek, which I've never seen," that would be something else.

JJ also might of said that to tell us that he won't turn Star Trek into Star Wars as he does know the diffrence between the two franchices.

* Just a thought *

Man, that was dissapointing, they basically did nothing more that a dog-and-pony show by hauling out Nimoy and Quintos. Didn;t say anything about the substance of the movie and unveiled that ABOMINATION of a poster. There is nothing original about that poster and it almost looks identical to the Trek advertising of the 60s. All the time and effort and that's all they can come up with.

I just lost a great deal more respect for JJ and his motley crew (didn't have much before this debacle). Not to mention Paramount/CBS letting this ass raping go on.

Huh? What's your problem? A teaser poster that hints even further at a direction of the upcoming film that will probably try to stay true to style and substance of the original series? the fact that we now have confirmation about two major roles in the film? And great casting indeed?

Why us that grounds for losing respect?

QFT , don't pay attention to the galatically stupid m8..

Lots of "We knew this!" here, but let's face it: we're a bunch of geeks who've made it our daily business to find out what's going on behind the scenes for Trek XI. This press conference was for the world, not just for us. In fact, the first time I'd heard anything about Trek XI in the mainstream press was this morning on both the local ayem TV news program and on the news break of a talk radio program I listen to every morning, mentioning this news.

And to the guy who seems WAY more upset about this than any rational human ought to be: calm down, have a drink, get some perspective. It's a press-conference, you're acting like Abrahms just killed your dog.
