001 Janeway Part 1
5 January 2374
“Captain's Log; Stardate 50014.4. We are continuing repairs after the event noted in the previous log. All crewmembers are currently recovering from the experience.”
Captain Janeway emerged from her ready room onto the Bridge. “Chaktoay, bring Ensign Hickman to my ready room. It's time we had that chat.”
“Aye, Captain,” Chakotay said with a slight smile.
Crewman Helena Hicks was surprised when Commander Chakotay called her over the intercom. “Something,” she murmured as some of the other crewmembers looked at her.
She could hear them talking about her as she left the Mess Hall.
Hicks entered the Bridge. “Reporting as ordered, Commander,” she said to Chakotay.
“Word has been going around the ship that you have been imitating the Captain.”
“I have,” Hicks said nervously.
“She would like to talk to you about it,” Chakotay said.
Hicks nodded as the First Officer pointed to the Ready Room door.
Janeway saw Hicks enter the room.
“Take a seat ensign.”
The ensign took her seat nervously.
“At ease, ensign.”
Hicks relaxed.
“I'm sure Commander Chakotay has told you why you're here.”
“I'm sorry for imitating you, Captain.”
“Apology accepted. But there are Starfleet rules about these things,” Janeway said. “Therefore I have to put a reprimand on your record.”
“Understood, Captain,” Hicks said, sitting up straight.
“Otherwise, I'd like to hear it.”
“Sure.”
“Dismissed, for now.”
“Aye, Captain.”
Hicks emerged from the ready room.
“How did it go?” Chakotay asked.
“Alright, sir, other than a reprimand on my record.”
“Let that be a lesson to you.”
“Yes, sir.”
Chakotay smiled as Hicks left the Bridge.
Janeway looked out on the savannah again. The repairs from their Kes aided journey across 13000 light years were still underway but they would be complete by the end of the day. ‘Talking about Kes...’
Janeway entered Sickbay. She saw that Kes was awake.
“Captain,” the Ocampa said as she approached.
“How are you?”
“Better.”
“That’s good,” Janeway said.
“But, I think I might have unleashed the Borg on the Krenim.”
“How do you know?”
“I’m not sure. Intuition probably,” Kes answered.
“There’s nothing that can be done about it now.”
“That’s true. But I also didn’t know about the Queen.”
“Tuvok mentioned her. But what is she?” Janeway asked.
“Seven of Nine would know a lot more. All that I can guess is that she’s a command aspect of the Collective.”
“Makes them more complex than we expected.”
The Doctor had overheard the conversation. “Everything is more complex than we expect.”
“That’s the experience of every investigator,” Janeway said. “But we will get home.” She turned to Kes. “Try not to worry about the Krenim. I’m sure that the Borg will find them as resistant as the Federation.”
“I hope so,” Kes said.
“She is free to go, although I advise rest for a couple of days,” the Doctor said. “Let Ensign Wildman tend the airponics bay.”
“I’ll let her know,” the Captain said.
“I need to think more about the experience anyway,” Kes said.
Janeway and Kes left sickbay together a few minutes later. “I thank you, again, for getting us out of Borg space.”
“We’re now in the unknown,” Kes said. “The Caretaker may have been part of group of explorers and later scoured the Galaxy for a mate, but he didn’t teach us much about way lay beyond. That’s part of why I wanted to be on this journey.”
“You may have told me that before.”
“Yes. That is one reason why I wanted to stay on Voyager, Captain. I want to reach the Federation with you.”
“I can’t promise that we’ll make it in your lifetime,” Kathryn said.
“I know that too, but you’re all my friends, even those who I barely know.”
They reached the turbolift. “I have to get back to the Bridge. There’s a lot to do before we leave this planet.”
“Have you named it yet?” Kes asked.
“It has a catalogue number.”
“But that seems inadequate.”
“I know what you mean. I’ll consider it,” the Captain said.
Janeway returned to the Bridge to see that Chakotay was coordinating the repair efforts with his usual efficiency. “Report,” she said as she came to the command chair.
“B’Elanna says that the warp core is back online and the shield generators have been overhauled. We should be back in the sky by 1800,” Chakotay reported.
“That’s good news.”
“And there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the spaceframe.”
That was even better news. “I’ll be in the ready room.”
