Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Thanks for sharing those tweets, fun to look at for sure. I like the Ross class more than most people here I think. I'm not very keen on the new Excelsior, which is a shame as the original is in my top 3 of all Star Trek ship designs. It just looks too stretched. Great to see some new ships though. It also makes me appreciate the Inquiry class more - seeing it alongside other ships rather than just 100s of them.

That is true for all STO classes. The all look almost excactly like an older class with a 25th century skin.

Oh I’m aware of STO’s take on their ship designs. It’s just that there are other game ships that would have worked better that didn’t look like a previous show ship with minor changes.

They could've always used something like the Concorde-class. They still might :D:

Now that’s a cool looking ship.

Interestingly, the Sutherland, Reliant and Gagarin classes all have higher registries than the Inquiry class, which in 2399 Riker stated was the ‘toughest, fastest, most powerful ship Starfleet has ever put into service.’ So does that mean that the Sutherland, Reliant and Gagarin classes are not as tough, fast and powerful? Because based on their registries, they’re newer. I doubt Starfleet started making them only a few years before season 2 in 2401, so they were most likely around before Riker made that statement.

Probably less tough, fast and powerful. Not every ship is built for defence/fighting. I'm guessing the Inquiry is more for the battles, the others could be built to specialise in all sorts of other things.

I know what you mean. Saying that, the advanced USS Prometheus originally had a lower registry than some of the "older" Nebula-class starships too. Guess we'll just have to handwave the 80000-90000 as two blocks that were in production relatively close to one another, but maybe ships in the "80000" block like the Inquiry-class (and Sagan-class) took longer to launch due to their more advanced systems.

Good thing for Eaglemoss, like with the Gagarin-class, they won't have to make a new model to sell if the Concorde gets used on one of the shows/seasons in the future :

I'm sure they all have different strengths and make different tradeoffs. I don't know what their stats in STO are, but the Sutherland class has a massive sensor array, the Gagarin class looks considerably lighter and more nimble, and they could probably make and run a half-dozen Reliant class ships with the resources needed for one Inquiry class ship.

Conversely, EM made an Andromeda class ship, but it wasn’t used in PIC. I get that you’re just wishful thinking, but I have the feeling that the ships we saw in the first episode are going to be the only ones from STO that we’ll see on screen.

True, and very likely. Thomas Marrone did say that the reason for the ship model revamps in the first place was because of the Picard tie-in. And the Andromeda and Concorde-class were two that were also revamped, with the Concorde being the only one out of the three variant Command Cruisers to be so. Still, it's probably just wishful thinking like you said.

I'm hoping the vast majority of new ships introduced from now on are going to be completely new for the TV series, at least the ones we get a good look at. I know it's cheaper to pull models from STO, but they've got a solid base of early 25th century background ships now and we don't need any more fleet fillers. Well, except for the Obena class, California class and Parliament class obviously!

Yep, that’s exactly what this was: background filler ships. Just like the old DS9 kitbashes. If we see ships up close, I guarantee they will be either Eaglemoss CGI ships or new designs altogether, like the Stargazer.

But I would love to see the Concorde class on screen, even if it was just in the background.

I really do love the fact that the people in charge of putting these models & scenes together are publishing exactly what everything is, within a week of being shown on-screen, as opposed to making us wait 20-30 years, long after the show aired and ended, while we painstakingly analyze tiny little blurs on a screen cap like an endless Rorschach test. The Wolf 359 ships and DS9 Frankenfleet come to mind here. They really do finally get it! :)
