Star Trek (TOS) FAQ

Posted by digifan:
Just a quick note. Uhura was the only minor recurring support character that never given a first name. Chekov mentioned Sulu being called "Hikaru" in Generations.

What point are you trying to make here?

"Hikaru" Sulu was established by Vonda N McInytre for the novel "The Entropy Effect" and then dropped it into her novelizations of ST II - IV. It was finally made canonical, much to George Takei's pleasure, in ST VI. (And thus "Generations" and VOY's "Flashback".)

Before that, much of early fandom called him "Walter" Sulu (see "The Best of Trek" books). Similarly, early fandom christened "Penda" Uhura, with the approval of actress Nichelle Nichols, who was asked at the big LA conventions of the 70s, but this name was revised by author William Rotsler (again with the approval of actress Nichelle Nichols) as "Nyota" Uhura for his "ST II Biographies". The name was picked up by several Pocket authors, notably Janet Kagan in "Uhura's Song". It was never made canonical.

Reiley, Kyle, Kiekso; etc does not count!

Kevin Thomas Riley was clearly named in one of his two TOS appearances. Canonical!

Kyle was never given a first name, but early fandom cheekily called him "Winston" Kyle, as a salute to the actor John Winston. The blurb on the back of "The Janus Gate" trilogy of novels calls him "John" Kyle, again saluting Mr Winston, I guess. But not canonical.

Who's Kiekso?

I expect that it's a misspelling of Kelso, the helm officer who gets killed in "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

Whose first name was Lee, according the Encyclopedia.

You had answered your own question. The sources you mentioned aren't "canon" therefore not part of the script. :p

Uhura was never given a first name on screen. In fact she is probably the only officer who wasn't called "sir" by subornates.

I'm fully aware what "canon" means. And simply being in a script doesn't make it canon either. It has to be live action - and aired - information. My question was asking you to clarify the points you were making.

Kevin Thomas Riley was named in a canonical TOS appearance. Sulu had to wait until the movies, and even then it was borrowed from a novel. Kyle and Uhura were never given first names in TOS. And Lee Kelso was. So what did you mean that Riley, Kyle and Kelso "does not count"?

Actually, Roddenberry's view was that Uhura probably only had one name.

This is very intresting reading I often wondered where the TOS characters got the name and when..

Star Trek (TOS) FAQs reports hat "Managerie" was a pilot for NBC. I read that "Menagerie" was the Star Trek pilot for CBS. CBS instead decided to do "Lost in Space." The two books I read said that, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," was the pilot for NBC.

Who's right?

'The Menagerie' was made for NBC, but the producers originally hoped that Star Trek would be sold to CBS, which didn't work out. Depending on what you read, that may have been down to an ill-fated meeting that Gene set up but executed in a poor fashion.

Anyway, 'The Menagerie' didn't sell the series though, a new pilot was made (WNMHGB), yadda, yadda, yadda, you know the rest. ;)

Actually "The Cage" was the first pilot. "The Menagerie" was a later two part episode that included parts of "The Cage"

I only looked in the thread coz of the flashy light on the side, I have no idea what was deleted. But that mistake I made a couple of posts ago was just stoopid!

Re: Walter Koenig and TAS

Although it didn't do any voice work on TAS, Walter Koenig did write an episode. The Infinite Vulcan if my memory is accurate.

From my understanding Walter did indeed write the episode.

Wow, what a great FAQ! Do you have it posted permanently online somewhere (e.g. a Web site)? I'd like to link to it from my blog if you do (with credit, of course). If you have a URL, could you please send it to me at inkygirl@PLEASEREMOVEgmail.com. (please remove the PLEASEREMOVE, which will hopefully foil some spambots)

Thanks!

I used to have a website from 2000-2002 but I got rid of it. This is the only place I have it, but if you want to copy it onto your page, you can.

Just a quick note.

Hey Garth, since the TAS DVD box set had just been released, shouldn't the first post be edited for its release date - November 21, 2006? I don't know about the R2 or other regions though. The official web site might have more details on this.

I'll update it later. You'll find out the reason for the wait soon enough.
