It's not the Protostar that made first contact, the upside-down Prometheus would actually be a logical alternative (fast vessel, well armed also if it traverses borg transwarp routes) if the captain has a thing for approaching alien worlds with the bridge pointed at the surface.

The Protostar came long after that, due to the wormhole Chakotay encountered and well after the visit of this first Starfleet vessel had its effects on Solum.

New power for the Vau N'akat: they just won't die while falling from dizzying heights!
