Star Trek: Picard is Good Star Trek

Hopefully PICARD is getting gangbuster ratings and showing CBS what we've all known....there is a shitton of potential for a full-series post Nemesis Star Trek. Tons and tons and tons of material to showcase in a 26 episode open-ended series with the same production value.

It's interesting how I only started watching Discovery and Picard in recent weeks, primarily due to my interest in the latter. While I'm liking both series, I find Discovery to have more compelling stories and more likeable characters.

Burnham is a Starfleet officer with strong convictions, played brilliantly by Sonequa Martin Green, serving aboard a state-of-the-art starship.

Picard is unique in a lot of ways, not the least of which the plot isn't centered around space travel, and perhaps that gives certain fans the impression that it's not real Star Trek. However, it's got a nostalgic appeal to the fandom, a connection to the 24th Century Universe not seen since ... Nemesis. It's edgier than its other predecessor series. At this point, I can overlook the hamminess of the actors and the God-awful forced lines, and instead focus on the mystery of where the story is leading us.

Picard is starting to be “good Star Trek” to me. Yeah it could be better in certain instances but I’m far more excited about this series than VOY, ENT, or DISC. It basically got me watching Star Trek again.
I feel it is different in tone, but The Impossible Box got me hooked. If it continues with this level of quality I’m happy.

Personally I think 26 episodes is way too much, it's why there are so many crap episodes of Star trek. Also considering the budgets that go into tv series nowadays there is no way there will ever be a 26 episode a season star trek series.

Part of what may enable so many concurrent series in production is the shorter seasons.

Likewise, shorter seasons reduce the likelihood anything will get stale.

Further, if you're not terribly fond of Picard, before long Discovery will be back, etc.

I'm very much a fan of this current production schedule.

Hunh. Rereading my post...I see I left out the most important part of my proposal.

Make it episodic. We can have 10 episode serialized shows and we can have ....fine...20...19 episode episodic series. The universe is big enough for both. And of course nothing has to be binary. Make it more serialized then past series. Make it asssss serialized as last season DS9. I dunno.

Im just saying I want ST: PIC and i want a concurrent mainstream episodic Trek series committed to showing us more of this post TNG world.

Edit: Shit, I'd watch an Admiral Shelby series.

Agree to disagree and all that.

The answer isn't "Make more episodes!" if something isn't working.
Better to apply the brakes and work out what the problem is.

I think after S1 they did that as S2 is much better although by no means perfect.

I cant see there ever being any more 20+ Star Trek seasons, that ship has sailed.

Better to have 2 or 3 shows that are around 10-12 episodes instead, I do think they should increase the running times more consistently though, to enable them to spend a bit more time on the characters, I was pleasantly surprised to see that 1x06 was over 55 mins in length.

Just have to wait and see.

With this sentence, almost everything is said. When the first season of PIC ends with this "hopefully end note" that was characteristically for (especially) the last ST show with JL as a main character, for me, it can be very good Trek. Otherwise, it maybe will "just" be another good Sci Fi show.

Indeed. And what I appreciate is that there is way more variety. Picard is warming up for me (it took time) but DSC was for me from the word go. Having Pike was just icing on the cake.

How I compare the two experiences on a personal level:

The Orville
--> Meeting up with people I knew in school in the '90s and they're still acting exactly the same as they did 20+ years ago and still doing the same exact stuff. Throw in some frat-boy dude-bro humor because they forgot that they're 40 now, not 20.

Star Trek: Picard --> Meeting up with people I knew in school in the '90s, they're in a different place (physically and mentally), they're not hanging out with the same crowd, and they've moved on with their lives. Life is quite a bit more complicated and layered at 40 than at 20.

I’d put Picard in the “Good overall but flawed” category.

The main story is awesome, but it took a bit long to get going and they have not made the rest of the cast very interesting yet.

But DSC had major flaws in season 1 and then in season 2 addressed most of them and made the central cast some of the best Trek characters ever.
