Mariner says that Sito graduated ahead of her. For all we know right now, Mariner didn't even meet Sito until after the incident.
Nova Squad were all BMOCs. Mariner was probably keen on meeting them. Sito seems to be a mentor/role model/hero to Mariner. Perhaps more approachable than Locarno.

STI for Star Trek Infinite.

I wonder how Mariner would feel if she knew that she perceived her relationship with Sito differently than Sito herself did?

Mariner "I modeled myself after this perfect friend."

Sito "I didn't have any friends. I didn't have anyone to talk to."

(To be clear, I'm mostly joking.)

Perhaps these could be Mariner...

Since when did Mariner serve on board Enterprise?

What a character: her voice was provided by other people :D
The only line really spoken by her is "Course plotted, sir."
(from MA)

Mariner apparently changed her name, as she was probably a Freeman at first, so maybe she was Gates between Freeman and Mariner :D

I figure her mom served on the D, and thats how Captain Freeman knows Riker. Mariner was probably a teenager on board in the early seasons, before going to the Academy.

Clip of the finale clarifies the relationship between Mariner and Locarno. Spoilers, obviously.

Morn had even fewer lines than that. Maybe Mariner was actually Morn...they both talk a lot!

Sito could have had accelerated studies due to her involvement in the cadet program. Or maybe Mariner was in a Junior year and they became good friends.

Did Mariner ever say she was stationed on the E-D for one of her early assignments?
No. It's been a popular fan theory that she was a child on board the Enterprise D while one (or both?) of her parents served on the ship. And in an interview a year or so ago, Tawny Newsome said she was "aware" of the theory but didn't comment any further on it. But no, there's no other indication she's ever been on the Enterprise D.

Indeed, given this new information that Mariner was at the Academy at least as of TNG S5, if one were to hold onto the theory that she was a child on the D, than she could only have been there for TNG's first four seasons, and would have been a teenager during that time period.

And given we know Sito graduated ahead of Mariner, that pretty much shoots down the theory she could have served on the D, at least during the TV series era. The earliest Mariner could have graduated the Academy is 2371, the year Generations takes place, the year the D is destroyed. So maybe she could have spent a few months on the D, though I find it unlikely.

Another thought occurs while writing this, Mariner would have attended the Academy at the same time as Harry Kim. I wonder how he'd feel about one of his classmates being promoted and demoted constantly in the time he's spent pining for a promotion?
