No, the intent is that it’s the Romulan home star.
If the Romulan star went supernova, Romulus would be destroyed before they even were able to hit a alert button. (I exaggerate a little, it would take about an hour or two to melt Romulus. The resulting remnants reach about 1/10 light speed.)

They knew several years in advance it was going to blow. That’s why Picard was helping evacuate the planet
 
That was fun. And fairly littered with allusions, namedrops, and outright Easter eggs. Not to mention James Cromwell as Hologram Cochrane. And of course, Ensign Mariner doing the "reverse-Mary-Sue" thing that is what she does best.

Did I ever mention that I have a DVD of an 40-year-old TV movie in which a young James Cromwell plays the rector of a church? Starring Michael ("The Waltons") Learned as a divorcee from Omaha who moved to San Francisco and joined the church's choir, John Houseman as a pompous choirmaster with a heart of gold, and Ed Bogas as the organist.
