Holy crap, this was a WILDLY uneven episode. The first seven minutes or so was the worst the show's ever been, with Mariner's behavior in the cold open so unforgivably, utterly obnoxious as to almost completely ruin the character for all time.

But, amazingly enough, the episode got better as it went along and, while not much if it was all that funny, there was some solid character work for both Mariner and her mom and the episode's "crisis" was far more interesting and imaginative than any one the show has had so far (far, far better than the zombie attack, for instance.)

It was pretty weak that the crisis' catalyst was Durango moving his ship for literally no reason at all. The show needed to set up better the rivalry with him and the captain to justify his dumb behavior, instead it kind of came out of nowhere and felt like a really, really lazy way to get to the good plot twist.

Felt the same way about the B story, really didn't care about it at all until it was nearly over, but it had a solid ending.

So, all in all, not a total loss after a very rough start. There's glimmers of hope for the series as a whole, but it also continues to make a lot of unforced errors. Get it together, folks, season's almost halfway done!

I liked the bonding we got with Mariner and Freeman. They are kind of alike, both have very revealing egos. Durango the Tellerite was fun, and I really liked that we got a bit of a sci fi plot this week. The terraforming effects eating up the ship was really well done. I'm not sure how I felt about the Tendi storyline. I guess she and Rutherford are not destined to be a couple, unlike what we saw in the first episode. They do make a fun team though.

You could cut Rutherford out of the show and not miss a beat. He never has anything of value to contribute and he has almost no personality whatsoever.

It's a total waste of a series regular.

slightly worse than last week episode still enjoyed it but the tendi ascension stuff fell flat to me and the opening was rather annoying which i suppose was the point

Four episodes in. Nah, I’m going to wait a bit before writing him off. I’m sure he will get episodes. Like Tendi did today.

I thought the whole 'terraforming-fluid' was a quite unique sci-fi concept, and I really liked how we saw the dynamics between Mariner and Freeman grow. Shoutout to the music as well! For me the only bad thing is that I have to wait another whole week for a new episode......! (Guess they're doing something right if I feel that way). These episodes are too short...!

What's it gonna take to get some Queer representation on this show? I guess I should expect this sort of thing from huge TNG fans where vaguely alluding to a gender issue was so amazing to them. It's a little disappointing, and with Boimler's girlfriend being a major plot point for next week, the heteronormativity seems here to stay. Boo!

Anyway, this was a great episode. The threat was cool, Freeman and Mariner's interaction was interesting, though Mariner's over-the-top obnoxiousness is really starting to get on my nerves at times, and I really liked the Tendi plot. The ascension was hilarious. I hope O'Connor returns some day.

One other thing I could do without is the very cliche 'someone gives a suggestion and the boss character rephrases it so as to claim it as their own idea' thing. That's twice now, I think? Please stop.

I think I saw two gay men in Envoys during the Risa part...

how would you describe Geordi after the first 4 episodes of TNG, personality wise? Or Worf?

Geordi was always a boring character. That doesn't make it okay. That's no excuse for giving us a character with no point and no personality.

TV is different now, it's much more competitive and there are much shorter seasons. "Whataboutisms" aren't actually a good argument for why it's okay when something is bad.

He should be interesting and distinct even when he's not the focus of a story. So far, he's not. Like, even a tiny bit.

Neither are opinions passed off as fact. I personally don’t think he has been bad. The show has focused more on other characters so far but he hasn’t been missing in any way. I liked him so far but want to see more of him. Given we are only four episodes in I think that’s perfectly acceptable and in my view there is no way is it ‘bad’. There has been a specific amount of screen time and he has had some of it. Especially in the first two episodes. I liked his date story in the first episode, and I liked his change of job story in the second. I expect more in the future.

It seems like people are running out of things to hate so they’re looking in every crevice.

Rutherford led the B-stories in the first two episodes, this week it was Tendi's time (and would it have not been Tendi's time, we certainly would have the same complaints about her) and to be honest, right now, I know more about Rutherford than I knew about Worf until 'Heart of Glory'. In way less screentime.

I feel sometimes people forget how ensemble shows work

Yes, I saw two guys looking at each other. It's not really representation of a particularly notable quality in 2020. Easily edited out. This is Star Trek, not Star Wars. Where's my Culber at?
I know Trek was late to the table, fár too late.... But I think since Sulu in Beyond, to Stamets and Culber, to Tig, to Seven and Raffi, Trek is making true efforts..! You can bet on it LDS will not leave this out..!

That's the joke though. Rutherford having no personality and just being a cheerful engineer who likes to work is lampshading all of the characters like this - such as Geordi - in the past.
