Star Trek: Kelvin

Here is my idea for a series from the new movie. Since it takes place before the movie it is set in the prime universe and the events in the movie do not take place. They already have the models and the sets so why not? Some characters may have to be recast, but I think this would be great. Captain Robau, George Kirk before he was married and for a doctor I was thinking Heather Noel, future mother of Helen Noel. A Xindi primate engineer and a handsome Brazilian scoundrel type for pilot. The characters need work so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I also think any Robau/George Kirk show would be awesome. It could start out pre-marriage, but Winona would definitely be a character--from what I can tell (from memory-alpha at least) there really isn't all that much that was nailed down in canon about either of Kirk's parents besides a few bare bones facts, so you could really go a lot of cool places with it. Plus Robau is a badass.

And there's the added benefit, that the more we fall in love with the characters, the more emotionally powerful the beginning of the new movie will be

My basic premise for the show would be a Gunsmoke to the Stars. The Kelvin would be a Scout/Destroyer Vessel. It's mission would be to patrol the area around the Neutral Zone. After the Romulan War, Starfleet was stetched thin. The area there became lawless. Orions, Nausicans and Tholians are out of control. People have lost faith in the Federation and have taken things into thier own hands. Robau and the Kelvin have been assigned to bring order and make contact with these worlds. He would rather be exploring space, but he sees the need for what he is doing. I am still working on it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The Kelvin would be based at Station R-11, a station similar to K-7. Updated to reflect the Nu-trek styling. R-11 would have four arms on it, two with drydocks and the other two with living quarters. Most of the other Romulan Neutral Zone posts would be built on asteroids, making R-11 a major hub for space traffic. Sort of like DS9. The Orions would strike from the asteroids and then retreat back fustrating and taunting Robau to enter the Neutral Zone. The Tholians would be there disputing borders set forth in the Romulan treaty.

In the first episode, on the maiden voyage of the Kelvin it encounters a temporal infundibulum which changes the future and creates a new alternate universe.

Now we don't know that the Kelvin will be destroyed by the Narada. In fact, Old George Kirk from the future says it won't.

This way we don't know how the series will end. And it's brilliantly original to boot.

Seriously - I loved everything about the Kelvin in its brief existence. I wish there could be more of it.

I sense at some point in the future that we'll get at least one novel tie-in about the Kelvin.

And it could certainly get name-dropped (The ship itself or Robau) in one of the many Prime Universe TOS-era Pocket Books novels.

I would love more Kelvin. I would read books about the Kelvin, either prime or alt universe.

I wish we were able to see more of the other ships. I wonder if they will be published in one of the fan magazines? I love your new avatar Dennis. I think it is your best yet.

Could be an interesting idea. Is there any hint Mama Winona ever was in Starfleet? Perhaps she was a Starfleet officer -- can't think of a reason a civilian would be on board a Starfleet vessel. That might be a nice twist, Winona beng maybe the Kelvin's science officer, who falls for the daring, reckless, valiant George Kirk. -- RR

I would like to think Winona was in starfleet, but as what I am not sure. I think she should come later in the series. She may have to be recast as Jennifer Morrison would not leave a hit show for a maybe.

Why do you guys still think Robau is a bad ass? just because he looks the part? He got skeward by NERO! he didn't even bother to move out'ta the way!?:wtf: If anything Geroge Kirk was the Bad ass raming the Kelvin in to the NARADA!

Alright then, you move out of the way on a ship full of Nero's goons. See what good that gets you. He wants you dead. It's like evading a single pirahna out of a whole swarm. Why move anyways? Somebody is gonna skewer you - might as well let things end quickly.

Besides, Robau went over there in the first place. That makes him gazillion times more badass than Stiles, Esteban, Harriman, and all those chumps from ST: IV put together, who would have stayed in their ships and sucked on their thumbs.

 Let things ''end quickly'' ? He's a starfleet captain, he shuld go down fighting! I would.

I did not see Pike putting up much of a fight. Robau knew he was going to die and he faced it like a man and showed no fear of it.

This is the first idea ever presented in this forum that doesn't make me want to roll on the floor in fits of hysterics. It's better than a Sulu series, anyway

I think Chris Hemsworth would be up for reprising his role as George Kirk. He had gravitas and presence - something he never had in Home and Away. I bet his few brief, distinguished moments as George Kirk were the best in his career.

I had some doubt's about Chris when I seen some interviews, but I found he was believable as George Kirk on screen.

As for Captain Sulu adventures, George Takei may be a good Sulu, but he is not a Jim Kirk type. Something about his performance in Trek VI irks me.

Robau just seems better. I am sure that if he would have tried to fight Nero or his crew that Nero would have retaliated. He did not have to let the shuttles go, but he did. I think he respected Robau and his sacrifice. When you think about the Narada defeating 40 Klingon ships, it would seem that the damage from the Kelvin ramming it may not have been as bad as it looked.

Of course everyone has a right to their own opinion on this and I welcome them. :)

Explain why the uniforms and tech looks different. What if this was one of those ships used by the Starfleet's Core of Engineers. The show would sort of be Trek's version of "Eureka" in that you have all these scientific and engineering experiments going on aboard the ship. Also you shouldn't forget that Pike was on the ship. What if he was the tatical officer. You should also have some nerds and ecentric types on the show. I would like to see a Trekian version of Walter Bishop.

In the movie Pike states he was assigned a disertation on the Kelvin. That probably means he was in the academy sometime after the incident, not on the Kelvin. I am not familiar with the Starfleet Core of Engineer books, so I am not sure how that would fit in with what we know of the Kelvin and her time period.

It seems to me from TOS that things were different before the introduction of the Constitution Class Starships. Episodes that referenced earlier ships show that it was years before anyone could even check on their disappearances. Episodes like Conscience of the King show that people were all alone and got little help from Starfleet. The Enterprise and her sister ships with their speed and size made the Federation a smaller place.

A series set before then would have to reflect the times. A ship alone, little chance of help if needed. People living in submarine type conditions, on patrol for extended periods of time. Maybe even romances forming and children being born before getting back home. Some at each other's throats being cooped up for so long. The Captian would have to be a diplomat and a judge, maybe even handing out punishments on some of these cut off worlds.

Of course this is all just my 2¢ worth. I am sure we all have an idea of what things were like back then. We trekkers seem to all have our own universe going on inside of our heads. :)
