Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Speculation Thread

CJCade

Lieutenant Commander

Now that Season 1 of Discovery is done, there is a lot of speculation of what will happen in Season 2 spread across numerous other threads, so I thought we should have a dedicated thread to keep track of everything.

I'll start off with a few random predictions I have:
  • Saru will remain acting Captain of the Discovery throughout most of the season as they will be tied up with whatever the Enterprise is there for, keeping them from picking up the new Captain.
  • Although the spore drive has been sidelined until there is a non-human interface found, they will end up having to use it again, possibly related to the spore we saw fall on Tilly's shoulder.
  • If we see the inside of the Enterprise, it won't be the bridge and we won't see any main characters like Pike or Spock, only lower level crewman for some reason.
  • Totally random, but I bet there will be the first guest appearance of at least one former Trek series regular in some capacity.

Off the top of my head, here are the open questions which haven't been answered in this season which are at least plausible stories of the week for Season 2:
  • What is the significance of the green spore? Is it Culber? Is it MU Lorca?
  • Is PU Lorca alive somewhere? If so, will we get to meet him?
  • Did "Captain Killy" somehow survive the destruction of her ship?
  • When will we see MU Georgiou again?
  • When will we see Ash (and L'Rell) again?

Knowing the writers want to do Science Vs Faith I definitely expect some kind of TOS-style "god on a planet" episode or mini arc. Am curious how this show would do that plus it would connect to TOS in a way I personally would love.

And I'm guessing everything goes badly for L'Rell. We'll probably see that a bit.

Nah. Expect to see Spock and Pike and expect them to advertise the hell out of it.

- Saru will become Captain. I have a feeling the Logic extremists from season one may show up again possibly attacking a Starfleet facility and killing Discovery's new Captain. Having said that, as much as I want Saru to remain the chair the prospect of a new captain does excite me.

- We'll see Pike and Spock

- We'll see some weird with a beard aliens but hopefully some old faces too, like more trill, maybe some betazoids etc..

- Tilly will remain hilarious

- Georgiou will start to build a power base, probably with the help of the orions and need to be dealt with.

- L'rell will be deposed and we will see some TNG style klingon politcal drama.

- One of the major themes of next year will be Science and Spirituality according to comments by Aaron Harbets on After Trek. My guess is that this may involve the vulcan syrranites in some war. More likely it will involve a new alien culture in a crisis.

- Stamets will deal with continued emotional fallout from Culber's death and the loss of the Spore drive. I think he may also get a new love interest towards the end of the season.

- Burnham will find a greater peace with herself and be a bit more chill and likeable.

- Discovery will be out there amongst new and unknown stars living up to her name.

Jason Isaacs will be back in some way.

We'll find out what happened to Prime Lorca and if he's still alive.

Wilson Cruz will be back in some way as well.

Stamets, with Tilly's help, will find his snarkiness again and the two weirdos will become a tag team for comic relief.

Things will end badly for L'Rell

After the aforementioned happens, Tyler finds his way back to Discovery.

We'll see Pike (Maybe Spock, too)

Someone with a connection to ENT shows up at some point.

I believe the new Captain will be an Andorian. Having to pick him up on Vulcan would be a great way to show how much better the relations between Vulcans and Andorians have become between Enterprise and Discovery.

I hope the very positive response to Shukar by the fandom will lead to at least one Andorian crew member, either security chief or captain. Personally, I hope for the captain, although I guess that's more unlikely. Whoever will play S2's DISCO captain will be about the same league as Isaacs and they probably don't want to bury his or her face under heavy prostethics and make-up.

The Vulcan extremists will play a big part in S2's plot and may or may not open the door to show us a young version of Sybok, his relationship to Burnham, Sarek, Spock. (It would somewhat make sense, even though it is a little bit to fanwanky for my tastes)

MU Pippa will return in a single episode.

I REALLY hope that for now on, aliens talk to each other in their respective languages and get the Klingon treatment of subtitles. I so fucking loved that aspect in S1. If my prediction with the Vulcan extremist arc is correct, let the Vulcans talk Vulcan*

*there are great linguists out there who'd give their right arm to not only develop fake languages further but are pretty good at inventing completely new ones. DISCO people, make use of them. Alien cultures don't seem alien, if all of them talk frigging English all the time

If the next season is a similar length, we could get through more than half the running time with dangling threads from season one. Where's Georgiou? Where's Mudd? Where's Prime!Lorca? What's Ash up to? What's L'Rell up to? What's up with the Enterprise? What's Cornwell up to? What's up with Sarek, Spock and Burnham? The fabled 'love story still to come' between Stamets and Culber. The spore drive.

However, I really hope they tread new ground this year. A fresh direction away from the mess of plotlines that was season 1 and make the most of the show's strengths.

I suspect the Enterprise's urgent call is because they found an injured Gabriel Lorca somewhere...

I think the Romulans might show up, which will annoy fans because of the Balance of Terror thing.

I'd like to see more strange new worlds and civilisations.

I think the Romulans might show up,
Haven't the writers told us time and time again that Romulans are not to be expected in DISCO and that writers who use that word in the writer's room have to pay a certain amount of money?

First I've heard of it! Though admittedly I've not followed many interviews with the writers or watched After Trek.

If Discovery runs for several seasons, it's inevitable there will be some Romulan involvement, even if it's in an unknown Enterprise way.

I Think it's clear the new captain of Discovery will be Number One from "The Cage" and we will get a Chief Engineer as regular since they won't be using the spore drive. Jason

Yeah I'd read that. They mentioned quite early that we will not see the Romulans in DSC. Things can change, of course, but plan A is definitely free of Romulans.

Yea, that is true. Which is a shame because the Romulans are great villains, I can't really see any way they could do anything with them. It'd be interesting to see if there is anything to the ideas that the cloaking tech came from the Romulans and their former alliance with the Klingons, have they ever fully explored their tech exchanges and alliances?

That's a Romulan tent.

I'm guessing that the mycelial network isn't over and done with, and that the "science vs. faith" aspect will tie into that and the mysterious green spore.

We will pick up a new captain on Vulcan, who, over the course of the season, would turn out to be evil (either being evil all along or becoming so through character development), thus cementing the running gag of Discovery always having villains in the captain's chair. After Saru comments on this to Cornwell after the climax, she eventually gives in and simply lets him have the position.

And then he turns eeeeeeevil!
