We will pick up a new captain on Vulcan, who, over the course of the season, would turn out to be evil (either being evil all along or becoming so through character development), thus cementing the running gag of Discovery always having villains in the captain's chair. After Saru comments on this to Cornwell after the climax, she eventually gives in and simply lets him have the position.

Could you explain how that's clear? Also, Stamets was sitting at the Engineering console on the bridge at the end of the episode.

Wait, didn't Alex Kurtzman say Malfoy was to be the next captain?

But yeah, I wouldn't turn it into a running gag for its own sake either. If they can tell a good story with the new captain and he works well with the cast, I'm on board, no matter his eventual fate.

probably. there is no one else around to fill the position and she's the only one without a clear purpose or departement. we already saw her on away teams twice and she was compentent on both.
she may not start S2 as security chief, but I guess by the end of the season, that's the role she will fill

Maybe the Enterprise comes across an "abandoned" fortress, and Pike gets ambushed by one of their warriors. Or, they are tricked by an advanced species that has an incredible power of illusion.

Agreed. If she's going on the command track, I would assume that she'd be at the helm, or is that an operations position in this era? Rhys could be moved to Security from Tactical and Detmer could take over for him to make room for Tilly at the Helm/Conn.

Does anyone know if DSC handles Helm and Nav as separate positions or is it Conn like in later shows?

I hope they let her be less wooden/Vulcan in S02. Also I hope the poetic monologues stop and are replaced by Captain's logs / personal logs from various crew members.
