Paramount decided to pass on that opportunity a few years ago. And quite honestly, it wouldn't have helped fix the film's story problems, nor did it have the troubled post-production of The Motion Picture.
I agree, but unfortunately unless were going to see another batch of Special special editions on HD, i don't think it will happen, I'm never saying never but it does seem slim.
I actually did a few experimental edits to TFF, replacing some of the crappy ship shots with better shots from the other movies. It looks nicer for a few seconds, but it doesn't make much difference.
One unintended consequence of changing the ship's registry to -A was that it made it difficult to use any stock shots from TMP, even a simple ship flyby.

^ The point is, will better SPFX make it a movie that enough people will buy all over again? The answer is no.
The movie already has 18 years worth of stink on it. Replacing Bran Ferren's crappy VFX won't make that go away.

As someone who has Star Trek V as his favorite movie, I would love to see what studios could do to the effects and fix them up. Now, good sfx don't make a good movie, it's the story and characters that matter to me. However, it would be nice to see special effects that were up to date, since what we got in ST:V was very inferior to what was available at the time. It could have been so much better, but we got cut corners instead. 
It would be nice, but I don't think many people would purchase a special edition like that (I would!).

^I agree. Trek V came across as a bit of a B-movie, but I think the heart of the story was pretty good.

People think that the biggest joke on Shatner in "Galaxy Quest" was Tim Allen's performance, but it was actually that they went ahead and made Shatner's beloved giant rock creature! Hilarious!

I love Galaxy Quest. Great movie all around!
Oh, and I guess I'm the only one who would look forward to a rock creature in Star Trek V.

Hey, a rock creature would be cool... Or several... They did have the river Styx in the original script...
I think DS9Sega is talking about home edits like what we see on YouTube sometimes...

I saw Star Trek 5 on opening day with an old gf. It was Friday June 9th ,1989. It was raining super hard. I saw it at the Multiplex at the Nassau Mall on Long Island. I thought the story should have started wityh a massive space battkle with the Enterprise-A blowing the heck out of the Klingons so it would then put in for repairs.
I remember seeing Trek 6 on opening day at the same multiplex. It was December 6th, 1991 .I saw a matinee show.I was nearing the end of my double major in college and i cannot the battle at the end with Christopher Plummer. When Kirk got up on one leg onto a console in front of his chair and yelled " Fire" and he twisted his hand i thought that was Great ! i started reading and watching Shakespeare after that. I have Henry V on dvd , Macbeth and a few others. I spent part of that summer touring Edinburgh Castle.
