Star Trek 5

For me the Barrier shot it looks like the ship wobbles a bit and it's very distracting. I liked the angle on the ship in the topedo shot. It's not the best torpedo and I still prefer the long light filament torpedos from TMP but for me this shot looked pretty good.

But this one features the awfully animated torpedo...it moves in completely wrong perspective...creeping to the right for a bunch of frames then suddenly vanishing way too fast. Plus, the "torpedo" is just a shapeless glob of light that looks nothing like the torpedo the Klingons fire.

I thought it was all right. What bugged me was that they used the WRONG SOUND EFFECT!!

Excuse me, but I believe what we've all been overlooking so far is the reflected Enterprise with the Moon as backdrop reflected off the windshield.

That's an okay shot but it all started when I mentioned that one of the poorer shots is when they are returned to the Enterprise from Nibus III just before the Klingon attack.

I actually did like this one too, except in this pic Kirk doen't look right. I wonder if it looks like that on the DVD. But I was impressed by this shot.

Thanks. I'm still fiddling with these. The torpedo was a lot of work, and you have to balance its brightness and saturation shot by shot or it looks cartoony.

I flopped the Klingon ship around because it targets the shuttle from its starboard side, and I felt it worked better "geographically" to have it coming from screen right than left, plus that worked better with the warp drive shot I lifted from Star Trek IV (and added the torpedo to). I also added the moons into the shot of the torpedo (lifted from elsewhere in the film).

Some of the shots I've played with that aren't in this sample are places where I added motion blur to the Klingon ship, and animated the torpedo landing in the not-God temple. Ideally, that shot would work better if the ship's phasers punched into the light column and then FOOM, but that badly done torpedo in the shot with the Enterprise is really difficult to get rid of.

^^^If by "getting rid of" you mean not including it, yeah. ;)

Watching the bits I've worked on so far, I think better effects make the film feel less cheap, and make it feel a bit grander, but they're enough to make the film *better* in any kind of substantive way.

I did start actually recutting some bits to see if I could squeeze out the groan factor. For instance, I sped up the shuttle crash landing so it's about half as long and much more energetic. I have a plan to get rid of row row your boat without losing the entire scene.

I think Star Trek V does need replacement SFX.

Shame it can't improve the crap storyline though.

If they digitally alter the movie, can they please delete that weird half-crippled bald guy with the gammy teeth?

Also, cut the whole "Naked Uhura" and "Kirk Fights A Cat" bits. Those were just awful.

Hey, a rock creature would be cool... Or several... They did have the river Styx in the original script...

Rock men plus the Styx would invoke the inevitable pun about how
Styx and Stones may break my Bones . . .

No, I'm pretty sure they'd insist on keeping Shatner in the movie.

Proper photorps and bang-zoomier warp drive.

Just a little something I cobbled together.

Nice!!!

Thanks. I was trying to fix the bit where the Enterprise zaps "God", but it's just so illogical that Kirk and Co. could survive a photorp blast that close that improving the effects actually makes it more unbelievable. I think having the ship fire phasers would work better, but that's a complicated match-move!
