Spoilers ST Prodigy - StarShips & Technology Season 2 Discussion

It's not really that different from any artist having a particular style or motif in their work. They have a certain look that they can become known for, regardless if one likes it or not. Still, in the case of production designers, someone still has to sign off on their work as being what they're going with. If they didn't like it, they'd ask for changes or (in an extreme case) hire someone else to do the job.

And again, I agree with all of that. My point still stands that I haven't seen much originality in starship design in some time, regardless of who the artist is or who is signing off on the work.

To a large extent, that's intentional. They want some designs to evoke this or be reminiscent of that.

Oh, sure. I get that. I'm just sick of seeing what are essentially lazy kitbashes when something more original (while at the same time evoking this or being reminiscent of that) could in fact be better designed, if one had the wherewithal to go that route.

There are only so much that a ship could change stylistically after so many designs are already on the table. Real world ships aren't generally radically different due to needs of manufacturing and such things.

Wow, the Inifinity takes the cake for most kitbashed ship in this era of Trek by a long shot! one wonders how much time was saved using existing elements to create it. I'm no CG artist, but I guess it's a matter of taking the individual shapes, resizing them, and sticking them where they need to go in the virtual space. This is the most greeblied CG ship in the franchise that's not based on one single model, but a whole lot of them. Apropos for the misfit crew, if you think about it.

And I'd bet that the producers were probably thinking that nobody would ever be able to tell that it was kitbashed. You know, from the same logic that nobody would be able to tell that the BoP explosion from Generations was the same explosion from TUC.

They're also going to lean in to what is considered touchstone of the era. Designing a new ship is riskier than creating a kitbash, which is very much in line with Trek's history.

Well, a good kitbash will look congruous, but not stick out except to the nerds. Look at the USS Yeager thread. :)

As it stands, on the Infinity it looks like only the greeblies were lifted from other models. Even the "Delta Flyer" model was a one-off and not a popular one, and the USS Nash bits, while seen more often, was NEVER seen close enough for people to make out the parts that were re-used.

Still, you can see it was made with enough care to keep things LOOKING nice without spending too much time on it. More power to 'em, I say!

Yeah, you're pretty much spot-on. Especially with the time circuits attached, it doesn't look too kitbashy. It actually reminds me of the BTTF Delorean!

I didn't get Delorean, I got the Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix, especially with the design of the villains.

Imagine how useful that "Portal Technology" could've been to StarFleet in the 31st century.

Michael Burnham wouldn't have needed to expand her shields so large to protect the relay station.

She could've created a large portal that redirects all those meteroids/ice chunks to somewhere else.
